Description and Terms of Employment
The Youth Flag Football Referee works under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Supervisor/Aquatic Director and is responsible for officiating scheduled flag football games coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.
This is a seasonal position on Saturdays only in September and October. Typical Saturday hours are 8:45 am – 11:00 am, but these hours will vary depending on home game schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for the position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned.
- Observe players during play and regulate the game, and interpret flag football rules.
- Communicate with players, coaches, parents, and other referees.
- Make decisions and resolve disputes between teams.
- Record game score and manage time of games.
- Promote good sportsmanship through respectful behavior to both coaches and teams.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, and the general public.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have basic knowledge of the game of flag football.
- Experience working with children preferable.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Must have the ability to carry out assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to effectively observe game play and effectively communicate with players, coaches, parents, and other referees.
- Must have knowledge of the game of flag football in order to interpret rules and make decisions.
- Knowledge of supervising children in an educational or recreational setting.
- Ability to operate ball pumps, flags and whistles.
