The City of Longview is looking for a talented and knowledgeable mechanic to join the Fleet Maintenance team.
This position requires applicants to pass a pre-employment exam. We have partnered with Lower Columbia College (LCC) in Longview, WA, to administer our exams. Applicants must take the NCRC work keys exam no later than June 16, 2023.

Select City of Longview Employment Testing and select the Public Works and Facilities Maintenance exam. The exam cost is $53.50. Applicants will need a Level 3 or higher to be considered. Position information: Responsible for performing specialized vehicle maintenance duties that could include: upfitting, repairing, and maintaining gas and diesel powered equipment and vehicles such as sedans, pick-ups, hybrids, buses, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, paving equipment, and street sweepers.

This position is represented by the EBA. Refer to the City’s website to view the current labor agreement. Employees in this position represented by the EBA shall reside within a thirty (30) minute driving response time under normal driving conditions to insure emergency response.

Essential Job Duties
- Performs skilled mechanical repair and overhaul work on various types of equipment(gasoline, diesel, and hybrid) such as trucks (both light duty and heavy duty), transit buses, and heavy equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, graders, dump trucks, tractors, paving equipment, street sweepers, catch basin cleaners, sanders, plows, mowers, small equipment, specialty equipment and all other types of municipal power driven equipment and power tools.
- Performs safety inspections of vehicles and equipment; identifies safety hazards and makes necessary repairs and adjustments to ensure safe operations of vehicles and equipment.
- Responds to emergency calls for assistance; travels to sites as necessary to assist others and transport vehicles and equipment.
- Designs and fabricates parts and tools; performs gas and electric welding, painting and body work to repair, replace or rebuild needed parts and equipment.
- Installs equipment necessary to prepare new vehicles to go into service and facilitate needed equipment changes or additions.
- Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment to include; inspecting, diagnosing and locating mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in department vehiclesand equipment.
- Makes recommendations of parts and related inventory that may be needed for repairs.
- Maintains service records including parts and supplies used in vehicle repairs and maintenance.
- Processes and prioritizes work orders.
- Complies with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
- Maintains clean work area.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or two-year technical certificate in automotive and/or diesel technology, mechanics, or related field; AND 3-5 years of vehicle maintenance experience OR any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
- Valid driver’s license in good standing
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with air brake restriction removed
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Refrigerant Handling Certification
- Forklift Operator Certification
- ASE Certifications (preferred)
- Must pass Level 3 of each of the 2 ACT/Work Keys – Applied Math and Applied Technology Tests through Lower Columbia College (LCC) OR provide passing certificates OR current employees of the City of Longview must have passed the City of Longview General Skills Exam.
