Description
St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a motivated, experienced Forestry professional to join the team.
The starting salary range will be $21.24-$23.29hourly depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. Examples of Duties
- Trims, removes and plants trees at various County Park sites.
- Performs safe and efficient operations of aerial bucket and crane truck, chippers,stump grinders, and skid-steer.
- Experience with safe rigging techniques for arboricultural tree removals
- Participate in prescribed burn operations throughout various County Parks
- Identifies goals and priorities for the Forestry Crew and plans and delegates assignments accordingly.
- Prepares appropriate documents for performance management, budget, and purchasing providing related reports as required.
- Ensures that proper equipment inspections are made and that all equipment is in safe, working order.
- Ensures the maintenance of outdoor facilities including snow and ice removal.
- Ensures the maintenance of turf, trees, tree risk management, and landscaping programs.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and six years of experience in forestry/tree trimming or related work including experience in a lead or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. College degree in Forestry/Horticulture or related field and possession of Missouri Department ofAgriculture public operator pesticide license are preferred. Additionally, candidates who possess an ISA Arborist certificate are preferred. Those who do not possess ISA Arborist certification would be required to obtain within the six month probationary period.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant’s education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.
Responses provided to the interview questions listed under the Supplemental Question heading of this posting will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. Once questions are scored, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.

St. Louis County offers its employees many excellent benefits with paid medical insurance, 20 days of PTO (paid time off) the first year and increasing with seniority, and 11 paid holidays. Employees hired for full time employment will participate in the St. Louis County retirement plan where they contribute 4% of their salary to the defined benefit plan with vesting after 7 years.
