Primary Responsibilities
HDR is seeking a Railway Design Business Class Director. The function of the Railway Design Business Class Director is to focus on the technical delivery of our products and services; in this way they will help position HDR as a preferred service provider in the area of Freight Railroad Planning and Design. This position is considered to serve as the “Chief Engineer” of the freight rail practice and thus has responsibility for quality assurance, resource availability and development, as well as project delivery. More specific duties include:
- Monthly Coordination Calls with Business Class, Regional, Area and Client Leadership. Address several key items including:
- Supporting the ongoing development of the Railroad Practice Group. Working with the Market Sector Leadership to keep HDR’s freight railroad practice state of the art.
- Identifying upcoming Projects and/or Pursuits that need support from the National Business Class leadership
- Reviewing upcoming workload and availability of the business class staff.
- Reviewing utilization reports to identify staffing needs (hiring / workshare). Working with Regional Leadership to support achieving utilization goals for the business class. Identify participants (and participate when appropriate) in Project Approach and Resource (PARR) reviews and evaluations.
- Perform project reviews or audits to validate quality practices. When requested, review technical and performance issues on projects, and help to develop remedial action.
- Working closely with the Freight Rail Market Sector Director to develop and support initiatives to help achieve the annual Market Sector strategic and tactical plan.
- Serving as the focal point for the Transportation Business Group to deliver freight railroad related services in collaboration with other complementary Business Group/Market Sector or Business Classes throughout HDR.
An important aspect of this role will be to identify Technical Leadership within the business class that can assist on key projects, programs and initiatives. The Business Class Director will contemplate and participate in the hiring process, promote staff interaction and communication, promote staff technical development and involvement in technical programs, manage work-share and project assignments and provide direct project support in leading select projects or other related assignments nationwide. Thus, the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment is a must.
The Director will also participate in select marketing activities by supporting or developing project proposals, staffing assignments, identification of sub-consultants and other duties as necessary. Involvement in all phases of project development is expected. This position requires travel to support select project pursuits and delivery nationally.

Location and Travel
The geographic location of this position is non-specific; however, a location with significant HDR presence is preferred. The average travel requirement is estimated at 30% with monthly variations between 15% and 50%.
Utilization
The responsibilities of this role is split between leading the railway design organization (work planning, hiring, staff development, interaction and communication, etc.) , business development (strategic and tactical planning) and supporting technical delivery with various market sectors and business groups. However, as a seller-doer, this position will be actively engaged in project and program work with a steady-state utilization goal of at least 50% on billable project work. The type of work will depend largely on the engagement, utilizing the individual’s strengths and experiences.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or similar required.
PE required.
20 years experience in the freight railroad industry with experience in various types of freight railroad projects such as mainline work, sidings, yards and terminals, facilities, structures, environmental and other related core and non-core engineering services.
Experience with AREMA and various Class I design guidelines and an understanding of FRA regulations is also required.
Must be safety trained and certified for all North American Class I railroads.
Experience managing/mentoring staff and providing technical leadership.
Strong communication, client and project management skills.

Typical starting pay range for this position:
• California will be $188,958.00 – $319,020.00 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• Washington will be $163,191.00 – $282,210.00 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• New York will be $214,725.00- $306,750.00 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• Colorado will be $208,590.00 – $269,940.00 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
