Description of Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the collection, evaluation, and documentation of biological, physical and chemical data on a large watershed including riverine and lake habitats. Objectives are part of a statewide long-term freshwater fisheries monitoring program focused on looking at trends in fish abundance, composition, diversity, size, growth rates and condition, along with aquatic vegetation and water quality changes through time.
  • Assists with administrative duties, including preparation of work plans, budgets, and technical reports.
  • Statistically analyze data, model fish populations, write annual reports, publish results in refereed journals and peer-reviewed proceedings and give technical presentations of findings.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of field office facility as well as lab and field equipment.
  • Assist with the supervision and training of seasonal technicians and volunteers.
  • Remain abreast of current developments, trends, and changes within the agency and profession pertinent to project objectives.
  • Participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate.

License/Certification Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
  • Possess or obtain a valid Florida Boaters Safety Card within 30 days of employment.
  • Successfully complete the FWC Trailer Safety Training course.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques used in fisheries research, research study design, methods used in data gathering, management and statistical analysis.
  • Skill in effective communication including writing technical and popular articles and for professional publications and in public speaking, safe operation of vehicles, vessels and motors, the use of fish sampling equipment (electro fishing gear, traps, various nets and trawls), laboratory equipment (microscopes, etc) and computers.
  • Ability to: work independently, effectively supervise others, conduct research study design, establish effective working relationships with coworkers and the public, swim, snorkel or skin dive, lift 50 lbs, walk or stand for extended periods of time, work at night and during inclement weather.
  • Overnight travel, evening and weekend work is occasionally required.

Working hours: 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday – Friday (early mornings, evenings and weekends as required). Occasional overnight travel is required.

List of any subordinates supervised: One or more OPS technicians

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and two years of professional experience in a field or laboratory program related to biological science; or a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences. Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Experience (OPTIONAL): Preference may be given to applicant with a background in fisheries research/aquatic ecology, experience identifying freshwater and estuarine fish, experience using gears to collect these species, and familiarity with appropriate analytical techniques, and data analysis using a variety of statistical software.
