Road Scholar offers a remote-first work environment. The compensation range for this exempt level salaried position is $65,000 – $70,000.
About the role…
Our ideal candidate for this Fundraising & Marketing Writer position is a lot like the Road Scholar writing style – creative, clever, authentic, pithy, interesting and quick to make someone smile. This candidate also has experience in writing for non-profit organizations that rely on fundraising and advancement materials.
This position will be remote, with the option to come into our Boston office location. Our ideal candidate lives in the New England area and will be able to travel to Boston occasionally to meet with the team, but applicants from around the United States are encouraged to apply.
You will…
- Writing snappy and interesting copy in nearly every medium imaginable: fundraising appeals, direct mail, email, web, video scripts, our own alumni magazine and blogs.
- Understanding the world of non-profit fundraising and the ability to turn these concepts into dynamic marketing materials across various mediums.
- Writing in various leadership voices for an array of publications and projects.
- Contributing to and maintaining a user-friendly library of current content, with attention to ways to repurpose and disseminate for multiple uses.
- Brainstorming creative ways to spread our mission.
- Working closely with the graphic designer or production artist to produce a perfect finished product.
- Editing electronic and print communications to ensure our high level of quality and educational standards.
- An ethos of excellence.

- Familiarity with AP Style.
You need…
- 5-10 years in a marketing or communications environment as a writer, with emphasis on non-profit fundraising and philanthropy writing
- Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or related field
- Research, writing, editing and proofreading skills bordering on obsession
- Familiarity with marketing techniques, SEO, writing to a Baby Boomer audience and communications that support the Road Scholar brand
- Proven track record of writing for fundraising success as well as an understanding of methods of giving and named donor programs
- Previous experience working within a creative environment, i.e., interacting synergistically with graphic designers, photographers, web developers, etc.
- Self-motivated; strong organizational skills; an ability to work on multiple projects within a project management system; accountability for efficient project movement
- A quick study; ability to adapt readily to a fast-paced work environment and projects with many moving parts
- Creative thinker and team player with good diplomatic, problem-solving and common-sense skills
