Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Tidewater Community College seeks applications for part-time Gallery Assistant who will assist with the college’s permanent art collection, the installation of exhibitions, day-to-day gallery needs, and programs related to the Visual Arts and Design Center. This position will report to the Curator and Programming Specialist.
Functional Responsibilities:
– Assists with the management of the college’s permanent art collection (PAC), which includes transporting and installing artwork.
– Prepares labels, wall text, and other collateral related to gallery exhibitions and PAC as assigned.
– Organizes and maintains artwork inventory and work areas as assigned.
– Day-to-day administrative work as assigned.
– Works special events that include receptions, workshops, lectures, and tours.
– Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and related applications such as Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator
Must be adept at using Mac computers and tablets
Ability to adapt to a changing work environment as day-to-day needs vary
Ability to multitask, work independently, be organized and detail-oriented
Confident customer service and public interfacing skills
Experience in art installation and handling artwork and objects
Must have the stamina, mobility and dexterity to climb ladders and lift artwork
Confidence in handling a diversity of fragile and valuable works of art
Knowledge of basic artistic principles.
Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends for receptions or the occasional public programs
