GBS Voluntary Benefits Experienced Underwriter
The Group Benefit Solutions Underwriting Organization partners with Sales, Client Management, Pricing, Risk Management, and other business partners to evaluate and manage risk. We are responsible for analyzing employer group characteristics and plan designs to determine the appropriate rates across our suite of group insurance products.
This position represents a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Underwriting organization for NYL’s re-entry into the Voluntary Benefits market with the upcoming release of our new Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity products. As a Voluntary Benefits Underwriter, you will use your knowledge and expertise to determine plan designs and rates for our employer group clients with a focus on assessing risk and optimizing profit. In this role you will:
- Evaluate and interpret data from numerous sources, including group demographics, industry research, and other actuarial tools, to develop a risk assessment of each employer group.
- Consult with sales reps and brokers to explain your analysis and work together to balance risk and profit.
- Have opportunities for projects outside of quoting, such as serving as a technical expert for our tools, identifying and implementing new processes for efficiency or acting as a trainer or mentor to other underwriters.
Ideal candidates for this position will have prior knowledge and experience of Voluntary Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity products and underwriting.
Responsibilities:
- Underwrite new business opportunities for New York Life Group Benefits Solutions Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity products.
- Perform case specific risk assessments to develop appropriate premium rates for presale business to support growth and profitability goals.
- Recommend strategies and plan designs to win new business opportunities. Proactively engage and consult with Sales partners and Enrollment team to drive successful enrollment results.
- Manage a growing book of business, focused on attaining profitable growth, persistency, and earnings.
- Partner with sales department and brokers to deliver customer presentations and act as financial consultant on case-specific issues.
- Develop strategic recommendations related to market competition, products, and pricing.
- Influence underwriting best practices and provide input to matrix partners on product development and pricing.
- Mentor and train less tenured underwriters. Help increase their understanding of underwriting with a focus on technical knowledge and competency skill development.
- Act as a trusted resource and technical expert to team and matrix partners.
- Represent Underwriting on projects and initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a business subject area preferred, or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum of 4 years of Group Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, or other relevant experience required.
- Ability to establish priorities, confirm and communicate decisions, work on multiple assignments, and adhere to deadlines.
- Innovative thinker who is self-motivated to learn and look for ways to improve our process.
- Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and willingness to pivot quickly when needed.
- Ability to make effective decisions based on independent risk analysis and strong financial acumen.
- Thorough knowledge of risk levers that influence market and competitive conditions.
- Strong interpersonal skills that foster collaborative working relationships. Demonstrated ability to balance stakeholder and matrix partner goals to achieve optimal outcome.
- Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to analyze and explain complex ideas; persuade and negotiate effectively with the ability to deliver both internal and external presentations.
- Highly organized and detail oriented. Able to manage time effectively and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Ability to lead discussions and deliver external presentations and analysis to a diverse client base.
