Summary

GEAR UP North Carolina (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs in North Carolina) is a college access initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to increase the number of first generation, low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

The GEAR UP Success Coach will work with Sandhills Community College and GEAR UP NC to support first year college students from target high schools. This will be done through high quality, high touch coaching, providing accountability, and facilitating successful personal development. Coaches are expected to complete various coach training programs, engage in observation, and debrief processes, and complete certifications while developing and fine tuning the art and science of coaching. The GEAR UP Success Coach is also expected to encourage interest in postsecondary education and build support for student success.

The GEAR UP Success Coach will report to the Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment. The GEAR UP Success Coach and Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment will have the GEAR UP Access and Success Manager as their point of contact with GEAR UP NC.

The GEAR UP Success Coach will work with the Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment to enhance and carry out recruitment opportunities and strategies at service area schools related to GEAR UP NC and other Sandhills programming opportunities. Additionally, the GEAR UP Success Coach will work with the Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment to implement retention strategies for GEAR UP cohorts.

Essential Functions

1. At the direction of the GEAR UP Access and Success Manager, represent GEAR UP at middle and high schools and other functions to encourage interest and enrollment of students at Sandhills Community College and build support for student success.
   1. This will also include working closely with the College Advising Corps positions at the GEAR UP NC highs schools that are in the service area and the contiguous counties to Sandhill Community College.
2. Help schedule, plan, and conduct campus tours for GEAR UP students and parents as needed.
3. Beginning in April of each year, the GEAR UP NC Success Coach will work with students who have applied to Sandhills Community College from GEAR UP NC high schools. The GEAR UP NC Success Coach will work with these applicants to help them go from application to enrollment in the upcoming fall semester. This will include working with multiple departments across Student Services to ensure the student has completed the necessary steps to enrollment.
4. The GEAR UP NC Success Coach will work with GEAR UP NC and the necessary departments at Sandhills Community College to meet the retention and enrollment outcomes set by GEAR UP NC. This can include:
   1. FAFSA completion
   2. Retention of current year cohorts during each semester of GEAR UP eligibility
   3. Increase enrollment of each new GEAR UP cohort by intentional outreach in the spring and summer leading up to the new semester. Intentional outreach can also include a presence in GEAR UP NC high schools in the Sandhills Community College service area.
5. Attend and participate in GEAR UP NC trainings as requested.
6. Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative coaching sessions.
7. Contact and schedule coaching sessions with students, as needed.
8. Coach students on developing a plan to achieve their academic and career goals by assessing values/goals, needs, and obstacles.
9. Conduct student programming to aid in the retention of GEAR UP students while following all GEAR UP policies and allowances.
10. Manage confidential information and provide accurate student information in the contact management system(s).
11. Utilize online programs, such as EDUmetric, to assist in accountability documentation and reporting.
12. Provide accurate and direct feedback to Access & Success Manager to receive assistance and foster continuous improvement.
13. Work with the Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment to generate the reports that are required each semester for GEAR UP NC.
14. Project, assess and report on student likelihood to be retained by SCC in future semesters.
15. Contribute as both an individual coach and a team member to further GEAR UP and the Sandhills Community College mission and goals.
16. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Sandhills Promise, Scholarships, and Recruitment, and the Vice-President of Student Services/Enrollment Management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Experience working with high school and/or college age students
• Knowledge of college services including financial aid and degree completion activities is a must.
• Candidate must demonstrate ability to exercise independent judgment and also show strong organizational, communication and leadership skills.

Successful candidate must be willing to use cell phone for work-related activities and be willing to travel.
