Position Overview

Our San Diego Construction business continues to grow and expand in multiple markets. We are excited to build on our current muscle and add depth to our strong, diverse and experienced team. C&S San Diego is seeking a construction estimator with a minimum of 5 years total related experience of which 3 years must be in commercial development (tenant improvement and or ground up), education (k-12 or higher ed) and or mixed-use/affordable housing construction. Preconstruction in a design build role is also preferred, but not a requirement. Our Estimators work large, comprehensive private, public and negotiated commercial projects within our core markets, and are responsible for the planning and executing estimating activities on a project level basis. This individual must possess strong people skills and will act as a liaison to the subcontractor community.

As an experienced construction estimator, you will handle projects from first estimate all the way through subcontracts being formalized. You should possess the ability to look beyond the basic information and to ask the right questions in order to complete a project cost evaluation.

You should be a collaborative and passionate advocate for our customers, empowering and informing them throughout the project. We encourage you to provide innovative solutions to complex issues as they arise related to cost, lead-times, trade partners, and/or specified products or materials. Throughout this process, you will utilize your ability to make reliable predictions as it relates to cost across all scopes of work.

Position Responsibilities

  • Handle complex, integrated projects from the first estimate through contract award.
  • Prepare and organize project RFP’s.
  • Receive and manage incoming RFI’s and subcontractor requests.
  • Prepare detailed instructions to bidders, trade specific clarifications and comprehensive bid packages.
  • Prepare a complete and accurate GC bid tab, compiling general conditions, trade proposals and applicable general construction self-perform work.
  • Make subcontractor award recommendations to the PM/Owner, assist with negotiating subcontracts with trade partners.
  • Prepare and organize all post bid submissions.
  • Prepare preliminary project schedules.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to lead and promote subcontractor diversity, and review all specific MWBE & SDVOB good faith efforts.
  • Make reliable predictions as it relates to cost and be comfortable estimating across all scopes of work.
  • Preparing detailed conceptual cost estimates and conceptual cost studies from schematic or feasibility level documentation, through several design phases.
  • Assemble a complete presentation-worthy estimate package that clearly communicates project cost.
  • Participate in and/or lead the preparation and presentation of cost/budget information to Clients.
  • Engage and develop business with new and existing customers.

Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of building systems, construction methods, and industry trends.
  • 5+ years of experience as a commercial construction estimator.
  • You must have experience preparing detailed conceptual cost estimates and conceptual cost studies from schematic or feasibility level documentation.
  • A strong work ethic and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Flexible, detail-oriented team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks, produce quality work, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent listening skills and strong communication skills.
  • Well versed with negotiations.
  • Create innovative approaches and solutions on a project-by-project basis.
  • Ability to identify, adapt to, and resolve complex issues.
  • Able to work autonomously and able to make decisions on the fly.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of unit costs and the factors that drive construction cost.

Skills/Education/Experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of WinEst, Timberline, On-Screen Takeoff, Revit, Procore, Microsoft Project, Primavera, OR similar Preconstruction Software
  • Bachelor’s degree a plus but not required

Estimated Compensation Range: $85,000 – 105,000/year*

*Actual compensation may vary based on related work experience, geographical location and market conditions, education/training, certifications, and other credentials, as well as applicable knowledge and skills.
