This position is located within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Nevada Field Office, in Las Vegas, NV. The individual selected for the position will serve as a Radiation Protection Specialist, with responsibility for management of assigned aspects of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) Radiation Protection Programs. Incumbent is responsible for planning, designing, and carrying out programs, projects, studies, and work related to the NNSS Radiation Protection Programs.

Duties
At the full performance level, NN-04:
The selectee will be critical to the government’s obligation in protecting public health and the environment by meeting legal and regulatory requirements.
- Must have a working knowledge of health physics concepts, principles, theories and methods such as but not limited to internal and external dosimetry, radiological emergency response, source control and decontamination principles.
- The incumbent must have a working knowledge with principles for accelerator safety as it relates to radiation protection.
- Assures that contractor management control systems and procedures adhere to NNSA/DOE and national nuclear, radiological and/or industrial safety, and environmental compliance program requirements, policies and practices, and contractual obligations.
- Conducts walk-through inspections of the facilities and/or operations for the purpose of identifying hazards, incidents of non-compliance with standards and guidelines, and potential problem areas.
- Assures that activities are performed within approved safe operating envelopes and in compliance with applicable orders, laws, and regulations.
- Oversees contractor implementation and compliance with responsible functional areas, including necessary and appropriate permit applications, compliance, and updates.
- Serves as the primary communication interface, both oral and written, between local NNSA/DOE management and the contractor, and maintains cognizance of all operational activities, both technical and administrative, in providing technical and policy guidance, direction and interpretation.

In addition to meeting the educational requirements listed, to qualify for this position you must also meet Specialized Experience as listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NN-03 LEVEL:
To meet the basic qualification requirements for General Engineer/Physical Scientist, NN-0801/1301-03, in addition to meeting the educational requirements for this position, a candidate’s application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA Demonstration Project pay band or GS grade in the Federal Service, i.e., NN-02 or GS-11. Specialized experience for this level is defined as: Experience serving in a position/role involving environmental compliance, with responsibility for permitting facility operations, or planning, designing, and carrying out programs and/or projects and/or studies related to the Radiation Protection Programs.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
1. Managing and evaluating, practices of physical/environmental sciences related to radiation protection and permitting of nuclear and non-nuclear hazardous facilities.
2. Overseeing requirements pertaining to 10 CFR 835, Occupational Radiation Protection. Identifying and evaluation radiation protection issues.
3. Monitoring numerous integrated and complex systems involving unique equipment, facility design, operations and processes, a variety of human factors, and dangerous operations and processes.
4. Briefing the senior management on program status and problems, and coordinating decisions, review, investigation and/or audit operations.
5. Assuring the adequacy of communications between NNSA/DOE management and the facility M&O contractor.

Education
GENERAL ENGINEER (0801):
You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included a major in engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2)include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Have a combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. There are alternate methods to meeting the engineering educational requirement (e.g., holding current professional engineering registration, having passed the EIT examination, or having completed specified academic courses or a related degree). PHYSICAL SCIENTIST (1301):
You must have a degree in physical science, engineering or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Have a combination of college level education and experience. Education is equivalent to one of the majors shown above and includes at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
