Under general direction, this position will perform various routine preventive building maintenance and repairs; perform general custodial services; operate and maintain ice resurfacing equipment, edgers, and various had operated equipment used to maintain ice surfaces; conduct oneself professionally through actions and appearance; and interact with customers and the public in a courteous and helpful manner. The General Facility Maintenance position will involve working a schedule that will require working days/evenings and weekends. The position may also be assigned to duties at City facilities throughout the year that require a work schedule that differs from the normal work schedule.
The anticipated work schedule for this position is Thursday – Sunday, 1:00-11:30 PM (4 10-hour days).
Examples of Duties
Operates and performs general maintenance on ice resurfacing equipment (e.g., Zamboni) to provide for a safe and useable ice surface for the public and customers. Performs general maintenance to Zamboni including changing blades, greasing parts, performs battery acid checks, and visual checks of all components.
Performs general facility and grounds maintenance duties. Takes daily readings on refrigeration equipment to ensure proper operation.
Performs general custodial, building cleaning, and grounds maintenance duties to include:
- Floor maintenance including mopping and waxing floors.
- Trash removal and disposal.
- Cleans and maintains restrooms and common areas within the facility.
- Performs snow and ice removal from sidewalks, parking lots, facility entrances, etc.
- Maintains building grounds during the summer months provide lawn and ground care (e.g., mowing and trimming).
- Performs general maintenance to grounds equipment (e.g., blowers, mowers, etc.).
Maintains cleaning and maintenance supplies (e.g., towels, chemicals, cleaning supplies).
Provides customer services for the general public including answering questions, responding to concerns, skate rental/skate sharpening, assisting in the concession stand when needed, and other customer service tasks.
May perform general preventive facility maintenance to City Hall facilities and perform general park maintenance functions, as required.
Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required. Other duties may include:
- Assist with crowd control during large events at the arena.
- Provide concession stand support when needed.
- Provide quality customer service to the general public including answering questions, responding to concerns, and reporting incidents.
- Follow and adhere to and implement all safety rules, regulations and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment as necessary or required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; One (1) year custodial, maintenance, and/or ice arena maintenance work experience; be mechanically inclined; ability to operate a variety of equipment; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver’s license. Work experience within an ice arena is desired, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the modern principles, practices, methods and techniques of building and grounds maintenance; of occupational hazard and safety precautions; of safe operation of job-related equipment, tools and machinery. Skill in the use of a computer and related software. The ability to perform the following work activities with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Ability to perform varied maintenance duties and operations under general direction.
- Ability to operate and maintain equipment, machinery, and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to work in busy and sometimes stressful situations.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor including lifting up to 100 pounds and perform work in a variety of weather conditions.

Work Environment: Work duties involve irregular and unpredicted hours that may involve working evenings, weekends, and holidays. Duties include working indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Duties may involve exposure to moving parts, cleaning chemicals, ammonia leaks, refrigerants, fumes, cuts from sharps, or other hazards that require following safety precautions, safety equipment, or following risk management and proper body mechanics.
Physical Job Requirements: Employee is required to frequently walk, use hands and fingers dexterously; intermittently talks, hears, reach with hands and arms, climbs or balances; occasionally sits, stoops, kneels and/or crouches. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
