What you will be doing:
-Splitting down QA samples of construction aggregate for testing purposes
-Performing various Aggregate Property Tests (e.g., LA Abrasion, Micro-Deval, Gradations)
-Recording test data on Aggregates as tests are completed.
-Logging samples as they are delivered to the laboratory.
-Helping to pick up samples when needed.

Official Position Description:
In the Division of Construction Management, Office of Materials Management (OMM), Aggregate Section, assists higher-level geologists in collection & compilation of field data & in conducting geological, geophysical & limnological field investigations by assisting with specialized field &/or laboratory sampling & testing of materials in accordance with American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO) procedures, including preparing test specimens, running tests (e.g., Splitting & Preparing Aggregate Samples, Gradations, LA Abrasions, Soundness, Micro-Deval, specific gravity) & analyzing data. Operates geological sampling equipment (e.g. hand augers, shovels, rock hammers); lifts &/or transports materials & equipment for testing. Maintains records of prepared materials & samples; updates records using computer & related software (e.g. Site Manager, AASHTOware, Microsoft Access & Excel). Maintains laboratory & field test equipment & instruments (e.g., greases testing equipment, monitors temperature of soundness baths & temperature of ovens & accuracy of scales).
Performs other miscellaneous duties (e.g., performs calibration, maintenance & repairs on laboratory equipment; researches testing procedures & equipment & reports on information collected; enters lab data into current construction related application (e.g. Site Manager or AASHTOware); prepares & maintains records on samples collected & tests conducted; cleans lab & testing equipment.
Qualifications
6 courses or 18 mos. exp. in geology or geologic field techniques to include collecting & identifying &/or analyzing rock & mineral samples.
