Pay range: $15.00-$20.00/hr during internship
General Purpose
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern will work as an integral member of our multidisciplinary team; focus on improving data quality, performing analysis, and creating map products and data outputs that are easy to understand. The GIS intern’s responsibilities may include spatial analysis, property research, mapping legal descriptions, reading legal documents, as well as some coding. The GIS intern maintains and enhances existing databases and may perform a variety of validations to maintain database integrity. This is an entry level position working anywhere from 20-40 hours per week as needed. The GIS intern will gain valuable experience implementing GIS solutions for the railroad industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and update geospatial layers
- Mapping important locations for projects (lease areas, tracks, points of interest, property boundaries, etc.)
- Reading, interpreting, and mapping contract language
- Utilizing multiple resources to gather necessary information
- Researching land ownership
- Create maps and products to support interpretation of GIS data
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to effectively communicate with individuals inside and outside the department
- Ability to conduct basic statistical analysis of datasets
- Other duties as needed
Required
- Currently working on or has a GIS Certificate or currently working on or has a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, geography, surveying, GIS, or related field
- Knowledge of ArcGIS (ArcMap/ArcPro) or equivalent
- Strong data management skills and experience with Excel
- Strong organization, communication, and time management skills
- Strong communication skills both orally and in writing
Desired
- Demonstrate knowledge in projections, version control, data management, editing features, etc.
- Knowledge of land title information
- General knowledge of Python, ArcPy, or SQL
