Job Description Summary
In support of the Student Affairs Learning Outcomes, the Department of Student Engagement manages three recreation facilities on campus – the Henley Fitness Center, the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall and the Julianne Argyros Fitness Center. Along with the other Wellness and Recreation staff, the Graduate Assistant for Wellness Education will collectively develop and implement services, resources, and programs related to student well-being. Through the execution of the responsibilities listed below, the Graduate Assistant for Wellness Education position creates welcoming environments that will contribute to the University by building social connections, increasing the students’ pride in their university and improving students’ healthy sense of self.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside the Program Coordinator to assist in peer educator selection, training, and supervision.
- Meet weekly 1:1 with peer educators.
- Maintain positive working relationships with campus partners from academic/administrative departments, Student Government Association, and Sodexo in support of the work of student organizations.
- Assist with the development and implementation of in-person outreach and educational events related to a variety of wellness topics, including but not limited to physical and mental health, use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs, and managing stress and sleep in a college environment.
- Participate in training and then develop audience-appropriate educational outreach for others on holistic wellness, including emotional, intellectual, physical, social, environmental, financial, and spiritual wellness.
- Assist in the development and distribution of program materials, including distributing flyers and publicity as well as representing the Dean of Students Office at events and brief presentations.
- Help the Peer Educator team research, plan, develop, and implement campus-wide awareness and education passive campaigns through print, social media, and other means of communication.
- Staff tabling events throughout the year to promote awareness of healthy behaviors.
- Conduct outreach to various student organizations to create opportunities for collaboration on educational outreach to their members.
- Educate Chapman students about high-risk drinking, drug use, substance use, recovery and active bystander intervention in a positive and nonjudgmental manner.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of engaging educational outreach during major campus events/activities during high-risk times such as Orientation, Welcome Week, Labor Day Weekend, Halloween, Undie Run, Interterm, Spring Break, and graduation weekend.
- Act as a role model and positive voice on campus in promoting greater health-conscious attitudes and challenging campus social norms where appropriate.
- Assist with program assessment, including contributing to the development of an end-of-year report.
- Assist with administrative work, including data management, as needed.
Required Qualifications
Little to minimal prior experience. Ability to learn support process. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

Time Commitment
- Mandatory training starting July 24th, 2023
- Ability to work 19 hours per week as necessary in Fall and Spring semesters.
- Late night, early morning, and weekend hours are sometimes required.
- Interterm work may be available but is not required.
