This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.
DESCRIPTION
The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), an organized research unit at UCSD, is an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institution that provides the infrastructure to support high-quality and innovative translational research. ACTRI’s vision is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health by delivering education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area and beyond. Mike Hogarth, M.D. and Davey Smith M.D. are the principal investigators on ACTRI’s CTSA grant. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Director, and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Health Sciences at UC San Diego.
The ACTRI Grant Writer will be responsible for CTSA NIH proposal and renewal submissions, required progress report submissions, and proposals of non-NIH funding opportunities. The Grant Writer will lead grant writing efforts for ACTRI while performing key responsibilities including overseeing and editing the work of grant proposal authors (faculty and staff), collaborating with ACTRI’s Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine, and Chancellor’s office teams and Principal Investigators on creating and writing narratives, completing forms, and coordinating application components.
The incumbent will organize, analyze and interpret complex, medical, scientific and/or technical data, to produce clear, cogent communication by applying knowledge of biological sciences to translate medical, scientific, and technical language into easily understood concepts. Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Serves as the point person for obtaining, organizing and compiling information to write/edit/compile large, multi-department and multi-institution funding submissions. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of electronic documents, familiar with document conversion to online formats and document archival.
The incumbent is articulate, professional and highly collaborative and motivated with excellent organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with short deadlines and competing priorities, experience working successfully independently and as part of a team while exercising a high degree of initiative. Must understand and apply principles of effective, proactive communication and time-management skills; will possess excellent research skills and knowledge of information sources.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to take ownership of, and responsibility for, work product and manage own time and workload. Must have an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Perform other duties as assigned including written content management for ACTRI and publishing written content to media channels and/or our website.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Demonstrated ability towrite concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical or narrative reports.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines. Strong skill in written communications including excellent English grammar, punctuation, and syntax skills that express complex medical, scientific, and/or technical content in understandable terms for a variety of audiences. Experienced in proofreading, editing for content, spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency, style, flow and tone, with superior attention to detail.
- Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills. Ability to communicate with stakeholders on project timelines and provide written and oral reports to the team and stakeholders on the status of active projects and action items. - Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location’s message. Proven track record with writing and submitting grant applications, particularly in large science grants.
- Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production. Must have intermediate experience with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

- Skill to maintain confidentiality.
- Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
- Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,600 – $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.67 – $53.45
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
