Graphic Communications Manager positions plan, coordinate, direct, and oversee the design and production of graphic communications activities including graphic design services, digital graphics, multimedia presentations, electronic publishing, mapping and printing; coordinate with client department staff to determine the level and type of graphic communications services required; manage project timelines and budgets; coordinate with Publishing Services team to schedule and prioritize printing services; evaluate current services and recommends more effective graphic communications methods; coordinate with vendors and contracted services; evaluate new graphics, and related graphic communication systems and equipment; ensure visual communications align with the city’s brand identity and objectives; prepare fiscal reports and staffing requirements; supervise, train and evaluate the work performance of all graphic designers; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
- Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial or Graphic Arts, Graphic Design, Multimedia Technology/Production, Graphic Communications Management/Production, Electronic Publishing, Television and Film Communication, or a closely related field.
NOTE:
- Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of full-time diversified experience in multimedia production, graphic or commercial art and/or enterprise-wide publication.
NOTE:
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
NOTE:

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- One year of full-time experience supervising staff involved in major multimedia, graphic, commercial art and/or enterprise-wide publication projects or functions.
- Technical Proficiency with the latest design software, technology and industry trends.
- Understanding of printing processes, file formats, image resolution, and web design principles.
- Experience working with brand guidelines or style guide.
- Experience in designing for social media platforms and digital marketing.
