General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Marketing and Outreach Manager, the Graphic Designer is responsible for supporting outreach, marketing and promotion of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront activities including: recreation programs, public events and park projects. This is a part-time, hourly-paid position that will be hybrid – one day working in the office and the rest flexible. Additionally, there may be time spent at various off-site locations in the city to support events. This position will work up to a 16-hour week that will not include holidays.

Essential Job Functions

  • Identify ways to actively support the City’s diversity, equity, and cultural inclusivity efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Work collaboratively with the larger BPRW team to support the division’s marketing and outreach needs.
  • Apply BPRW branding to a wide range of visual communications including, but not limited to: signage, print & digital advertisement, branded collateral, maps, presentations, posters and more.
  • Use creative skills to create graphics for print and online distribution.
  • Prepare social media posts.
  • Photograph events and programs.
  • Organize and manage image assets.
  • Copy edit and write with strong attention to detail.
  • Work under short deadlines and under pressure. Creatively problem-solve when required.
  • Regular attendance and check-ins with Marketing and Outreach Manager (in person and/or virtual).
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and follow city-wide safety policy and practices and adhere to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, and report any unsafe activities and conditions.
  • Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Associates degree in marketing, graphic design, public communications, or commensurate professional experience.
  • 3 years of design experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Solid understanding of the print process and web graphics.
  • Ability to be proactive and take ownership of projects will be key.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a team, as well as independently.
  • Uphold the brand: develop and maintain graphic standards, quality and design integrity.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and oral skills required.
  • Excellent design and graphic skills required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by professional development.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Design portfolio – will be requested.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with additional Adobe Creative Suite programs (Lightroom, Bridge, Premier Pro), WordPress, Hootsuite, Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Burlington’s diverse communities and local organizations.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to creatively problem-solve.
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license within 45 days of hire and the continued maintenance of a valid driver’s license. Operation of a City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver’s license to Human Resources will not be permitted. A valid driver’s license shall be defined as a current state of residence-issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City’s vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non-City vehicles for City business.
