Job Description Summary
The Groundskeeper III provides assistance to the Ballpark Supervisor to help supervise the grounds maintenance operation for the Goodyear Ballpark and Recreational Complex. This position oversees and works alongside full-time staff, part-time staff, and contracted services to perform the care and maintenance of professional baseball fields, related facilities, medians, and right of ways surrounding the Goodyear Ballpark and the Recreational Complex. Assumes lead role and responsibilities when Ballpark Supervisor is not onsite.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 3 years of professional level baseball grounds keeping, a minimum of 1 year of experience in irrigation systems (programming, field repairs, and conservation techniques), and a minimum of 1 year of experience in leading staff at a sports turf field facility. Landscape maintenance experience is desirable, although not required. Candidate must also have the ability to thrive in a high work volume and fast-paced environment, be flexible with work shifts/times, and work in extreme outdoor environments.

Essential Functions
This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.
- Maintains responsibilities by leading work crews, developing performance indicators, writing reports, developing budget information, and obtaining estimates for spring training facilities improvements or special projects.
- Inspects daily maintenance and projects. Drafts reports on findings. Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
- Performs administrative duties by typing memorandums, letters, and reports. Reviews blueprints for irrigation work and facility projects. Attends various meetings.
- Applies herbicides, fungicides and maintains pesticide records.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Estimates and manages material and labor cost for special projects, improvements at Goodyear Ballpark and Recreational Complex.
- Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Ballpark Foreman as assigned during his/her absence.
Requirements
Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Experience: Minimum three years’ experience in a related field.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License, Arizona Structural Pesticide License in Right of Ways or Turf & Ornamentals and must possess one or more of the following certifications (or equivalent):
- Arizona Certified Landscape Professional
- Georgia Sports Turf Certification
- Ohio State Sports Turf Certification
- SmartScape Certification
- University of Arizona Desert Turf School
Reading: Work requires the ability to read chemical distribution booklets, training guides, irrigation manuals, operating equipment manuals, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals.
Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Writing: Work requires the ability to write work orders, evaluation logs, and reports.
Managerial: Semi-Complex – Work requires functioning as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training, instructing, and scheduling work.
Policy/Decision Making: Moderate – The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts may be reviewed prior to being finalized.
Technical Skills: Broad Application – Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgement and decision making abilities.
- Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate – In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures. In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
12 Month Objectives
1. Lead hands on trainings for new staff using designated SOP’s on all equipment as necessary.
2. Update and maintain fertilization and chemical application log on an on-going basis.
3. Participate in SOP/JHA creation process by attending and actively participating in designated weekly meetings.
4. Actively participate in the Department Safety Program as required, including attending committee meetings.
5. Assist Supervisor in completing any field/facility audits as necessary.
6. Be able to interact with various department, divisions, customers and City personnel on a positive level.
7. Assist/work closely as needed with the Irrigation Specialist position to ensure optimal performance of irrigation system.
