Program Description

Bob G’s Shelter Program provides 24/7 enhanced shelter services for 65 adults aged 50 and older, experiencing homelessness. As a result of their age and living conditions, the majority of our guests suffer from mental and physical disabilities. The shelter serves this special population of older adults who are vulnerable to the weather, street predators, and illness. No referrals are needed for entry into the program. Participants run the entire spectrum of needs. Many clients have chronic and acute physical health, mental illness, active addiction issues, and/or trauma. This is a low-barrier, harm reduction program. Our mission is to provide a hospitable and low barrier shelter using a harm reduction model. This is to be done in the spirit of the ministry of presence, which fosters attention to the individual and respect for each person’s unique situation. Bob G’s Shelter emphasizes moving people into permanent housing through case management.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor center throughout shift (including restrooms, hallway and the front of building) responding to any crisis situations. De-escalate problematic behavior and implement consequences for violating the day center’s guidelines.
  • Refer Clients to appropriate social services agencies for assistance.
  • Intake clients, record attendance and other statistical data in Clarity.
  • Receive visitors and in-kind donations.
  • Receive and sort mail
  • Monitor Shelter bus line.
  • Assist in transportation of Shelter Residents from Shelter bus line to Shelter.
  • Attend and participate staff meetings and trainings required by CCS/CHS for all employees.
  • Help prepare and serve and meals.
  • Read and oversee the daily log of day center activities.
  • Make sure client mail is tracked, stored and distributed safely
  • Assist in daily tasks such as, but not limited to, cleaning, emptying garbage and assisting in the laundry.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Lead Staff, Program Supervisor or Director.

Job Conditions

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material. Other exposures could inclide cleaning supplies, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance. Working conditions may include interruptions with angry persons, and exposure to computer CRTs.

Physical and Mental Acuity Requirements

  • Able to hear telephone rings, phone conversation, doorbells, emergency alarms and face-to-face conversation.
  • Able to speak clearly in person and on the telephone.
  • Able to hand write legibly.
  • Vision that enables person to read normal size print and handwritten notes; and distance and peripheral vision than enables person to monitor large space and identify concerns that require staff response.
  • Mobility/dexterity of hands/arms to enable keying into locked areas as well as using a computer and other office equipment.
  • Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  • Able to walk the entire building and ascend and descend stairs quickly to move from one floor to another in order to respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift, move and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in performing job duties.

Qualifications

  • 6 months of direct service with homeless people or a similar population.
  • Work history that demonstrates: Reliability and dependability; Ability to interact and communicate well with others; Ability to provide leadership to volunteers.
  • Experience in crisis intervention.
  • Understanding of the disease of alcoholism and other substance abuse issues, and mental health disorders.
  • Support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multicultural situations.
  • Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment.
