Description
The Virginia Zoo is seeking a highly motivated Guest Engagement Specialist to join our team.
As a Guest Engagement Specialist, you will work within the education department to maximize the effectiveness of the Virginia Zoo’s interpretive and guest engagement programs. The Guest Engagement Specialist assists the educational management team with program development and by providing the essential educational research and resources necessary for success.
This is a part time (25-32 Hours), non-exempt position. Reports to the Conservation Engagement Manager
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development, scheduling, training, and evaluation of guest engagement programs, including but not limited to daily Zoo interpretive programs, Conservation Youth Team, scheduled toddler programs, and Zoo-wide events.
- Assist the Education Management Team with providing daily administration and evaluation of staff and volunteers’ execution of guest engagement programs.
- Provide monthly reports on attendance and feedback for guest engagement programs and work with Education Management Team to identify any missed opportunities and opportunities for growth.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and facilitation of interpretation trainings for Zoo staff and volunteers.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, and revision of existing Conservation Youth Team (CYT) training modules and program track options in coordination with the Volunteer Programs Manager.
- Assist the Volunteer Programs Manager and Volunteer Coordinator with scheduling, designing, and facilitating both On-site and off-site CYT events throughout the year.
- Handle Animal Ambassador collection animals utilized in educational programs
- Assist other Zoo departments by providing research content, write articles, fliers, communications/interpretive materials, and other promotional and support materials, as assigned.
- Remain up to date on latest trends and research to promote effective educational guest engagement strategies.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent experience in related field
- At least two years related experience required.
- Certification from the National Association of Interpretation (CIG or CIT), preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to work outside year-round in varying weather conditions.
