DESCRIPTION
The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head Coach for Men’s Rowing. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world’s premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation.
UC San Diego Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence, sponsors 23 varsity sports, and is in transition to NCAA Division I as a member of the Big West Conference. The Head Coach has responsibility for the overall operation of the Men’s Rowing program in accordance with university, conference and NCAA/IRA regulations. The position is a 100% time, 12-month contract position with full benefits. The Head Coach must have a commitment to the philosophy of providing a competitive NCAA program that emphasizes integrity and the educational welfare of its student-athletes and strives for athletic excellence within the University’s mission.
Regular duties include coaching effectively in practices and successfully in competition’s, developing student-athletes athletically and academically, organizing and implementing a recruiting plan, effectively utilizing scholarship funds to attract and retain top scholar-athletes, preparing and monitoring annual operational, recruiting, and scholarship budgets, participating in promotional and fundraising activities, and developing community and alumni support. Must have highly advanced and effective interpersonal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with diverse student-athletes, parents of student-athletes, staff and alumni.

Preferred successful collegiate head coaching experience at a high-ranking academic institution, working knowledge of NCAA regulations, and a bachelor’s degree. Work schedule will be arranged with supervisor, but often includes evenings, weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Recognized expertise in team sport and coaching principles for student athletes. Successful collegiate coaching, teaching, and/or competing experience in specified sport.
- Highly advanced and effective interpersonal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with athletic participants, staff and parents of student athletes.
- Ability to interact effectively with others in pursuing departmental objectives, including various student groups and campus organizations.
- Ability to demonstrate creativity, sound judgment and decision-making; be an effective problem solver and be highly effective communicating verbally, in writing and for live media presentations.
- Good interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, flexibility and ability to communicate ideas effectively. Ability to foster an environment that supports equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Demonstrated effective recruiting and use of scholarship funds in recruiting and budgeting skills
- Proven ability and experience to conduct camps and/or clinics in specified sport. Strong demonstrated knowledge of sound principles and rules governing specified sport.
- Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
- Skill to arrange home contests, ensuring availability of facilities and coordination of venue set-up, officials and game management.
- Skill to arrange away contests, ensuring coordination of travel rosters, travel advance requests, transportation, food, lodging, equipment, expense and trip reports. - Supervisory and leadership skills to mentor and develop assistant coaches and / or program instruction staff.
- Knowledge of academic requirements for admitted and continuing students. Skill to deal with student needs in a range of academic and non-academic issues.
- Demonstrated skill in fundraising, community and/or alumni support development.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- This position is a mandated reporter of known or suspected child abuse or neglect, according to the California law, Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).
- This position is a campus security authority (CSA) for the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, which is a federal law requiring disclosure of information about crimes on and around campus.
- Work schedule will be arranged with supervisor, but often includes evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Incumbent must participate in the DMV Pull program and maintain a clean DMV record.
- Background check and DMV check required.
- Must maintain NCAA certified recruiter status.
- Must maintain CPR / AED and First Aid certification.
