Description
Under the direction and supervision of the Kinston Community Center Director and Assistant Director, responsible for the operation of the swim team including organizing, completing assigned tasks, communicating with parents, and working with swimmers. The Head Coach will also help guide assistant coaches in these areas.

  1. Build meaningful relationships with members and participants; help members connect with one another and to the Community Center.
  2. Work daily to nurture the potential of youth and teens; help people improve their well-being; and provide opportunities for people to give back and support their neighbors.
  3. Promote the mission of the Kinston Community Center core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all job-related functions.
  4. Lead practices of the group(s) with care and excitement.
  5. Ensure the safety of swimmers at the practice by following proper precautions and regulations.
  6. Give swimmers knowledge to understand and master stokes allowing for movement up through the swim team groups.
  7. Be on deck before swimmers begin practice, to greet swimmers and parents.
  8. Help set up and run swim meets as deemed necessary by the Aquatic Director.
  9. Communicate effectively with the Assistance Coaches about daily practice procedures, emergencies, and information regarding swimmers and swim team well being.
  10. Attend any and all team meeting, get together.
  11. Provide corrective feedback that will enhance swimmers’ techniques.
  12. Maintain structure and discipline within a group setting, while encouraging and promoting student participation in as positive manner.
  13. Engage parents and cultivate relationships to create a collaborative swim team environment
  14. Conduct self in a professional, friendly, helpful, courteous and diplomatic manner.
  15. Follow Community Center policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.
  16. Any additional tasks and/or duties as assigned by Kinston Community Center Assistant Director

DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervises the swimmers during practices, meets and any other swim periods.
  2. Teach proper stroke techniques while coaching.
  3. Handles all swim meet preparation, including equipment set-up.
  4. Distributes awards.
  5. Leads daily practices.
  6. Creates line-ups for all swim meets.
  7. Assists with the preparation, operation and clean-up of home swim meets.
  8. Works with the assistant coaches on time management, practice structure, award distribution procedures, record keeping for swimmers, and overall aptitude for coaching.
  9. Works with all coaches on meet set-up, reaction of line-ups, creation of workouts, practice development, and award distribution.
  10. Serves as the primary communicator to the Aquatic Manager, assistant coaches, parents, and swimmers.
  11. Attends and participates in coaches’ meetings.
  12. Records swimmers’ meet results.
  13. Coordinates swim meet volunteers for home swim meets.
  14. Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  15. Performs the job in compliance with District policies, procedures, work rules, and the employee handbook.
  16. Reports unusual maintenance problems or irregularities to the Aquatic Manager or Building Technicians.
  17. May need to perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
  18. Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Kinston Community Center, with specific attention to safe pool use during swim team periods.
  19. Work as a Team Player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments.

Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a competitive swimming background, and be at least 18 years of age. Must have an understanding of how children learn, while having the ability to communicate clearly and directly with them. Must have communication skills to communicate effectively and efficiently with the Assistant Coaches, other Community Center staff, and the swim team parents. Must maintain certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR with AED and First Aid, or become certified within a reasonable amount of time of starting the job.

Temporary Seasonal employees work 1000 or less each year.
