The Opportunity

As the Health Communications Specialist, you will serve a vital role in providing communications, marketing, and dissemination expertise and services to promote access to, use, and value of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health data. This position will be on-site at the CDC’s Hyattsville, MD or Atlanta, GA office or hybrid remote/on site. In this role, you will work closely with CDC staff and will communicate strategy and marketing support to establish and promote CDC as the source for the official health statistics of the United States. An important part of your work will be developing and implementing digital communication strategies to maximize the value of digital assets and services through content strategy, data dashboards and visualizations, social media, and other digital tactics, channels, and formats.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide services to support centrally administered CDC communications, marketing and dissemination activities.
  • Communications Project Management and Reporting
    • Help develop communication and marketing plans and strategies for disseminating and promoting products and services. Analyze communications, marketing, and dissemination goals for internal and external audiences. Identify new channels and sources for promotion.
  • Develop and Disseminate Products
    • Assist CDC staff in the design, development and dissemination of collateral including print, video, social media and web-based products and services for promoting health data and statistics. Disseminate communications to diverse audiences using electronic formats.

Write Content for External and Internal Audiences

Review, edit, and rewrite content for CDC-INFO Prepared Responses (PRs) and other products and services using CDC’s Clear Communication Index Score Sheet. Write, recommend content, or edit contributed content for blog posts. Assist with writing, developing, and presenting information, data, and training materials to internal and external stakeholders. Aid in writing and editing study recruitment marketing materials, policies and procedures, internal news and event announcements, CDC Today announcements, and Events Calendar submissions. Support development of internal communication messages for staff. Obtain all necessary clearances for releasing internal communication messages and products. Identify and support new platforms, channels, and strategies to improve internal communication. Coordinate the What’s Happening Now calendar.

Maintain Marketing Databases and Lists

Update and maintain internal marketing databases, matrices, and other resources, including Adobe Campaign (email subscription services) and university, provider, mortality, state and health department lists. Work in conjunction with CDC staff to update and identify new internal listservs and mailing lists.

Webinars, Meetings, Workshops Conferences and Events

Assist in planning, promoting and conducting webinars for the release of new reports. Assist CDC staff with writing, developing, and presenting to stakeholders at meetings, conferences, and workshops. Provide project management for annual Awards Ceremony, develop program materials and coordinate meetings, videos, etc. Coordinate special events internal and external such as training, ceremonies, and outreach events.

Attend onsite and virtual seminars and webinars that highlight the newest data releases and other meetings identified by Technical Monitor. Complete CDC training requirements, including free plain language training.

What We Value

  • P4: Bachelor’s Degree + Nine years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Seven years of relevant experience, or PhD + Four years of relevant experience
  • P5: Bachelor’s Degree + Twelve years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Ten years of relevant experience, or PhD + Eight years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in communications planning and delivery including digital content delivery, digital content management, social media publishing workflows and other related fields.
  • Expertise in science writing, translating science to a variety of audiences in a variety of formats, and writing reports.
  • Experience with event management including in person events and webinars.
  • Demonstrated experience with CDC.
  • Ability to work on site in CDC’s Hyattsville, MD or Atlanta, GA office with potential to work remotely or a hybrid of both.
  • Previous experience working on site (badged) at CDC preferred.

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $69,111.30 to $110,589.04 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
