Why does the job exist?
The New Mexico Department of Health is committed to providing population-based health services to assure the health and well being of all New Mexicans. This position is responsible for supporting the Northeast Region of New Mexico and assuring appropriate and quality vaccination services are provided for the population.
How does it get done?
The Health Educator is responsible for the clinical vaccine prevention and management initiative for the Northeast Region and will ensure adherence to statewide Immunization Program Protocols. The Health Educator is responsible for quality assurance, training, providing clinical information and direction, and expertise for all the Vaccine for Children (VFC) providers in the Northeast Region. The Health Educator works as part of an immunization team to assure appropriate administration of vaccines for children and adults within the Northeast Region.
Who are the customers?
The population of the New Mexico and specially the population of the Northeast Region (Colfax, Guadalupe, Harding, Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Taos, and Union counties) who might otherwise not have access to services. The Health Educator supports immunizations providers internal to New Mexico Department of Health as well as private providers and other public providers in the NE Region.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and two (2) years of experience in a health related field. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability ACT (HIPAA) course. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico, or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), and extensive personal computer and phone usage, and in communities, clinics, auxiliary site settings and in the homes of consumers to a diverse racial and ethnic population, many of whom do not speak English. Reaching and lifting a maximum fifty (50) pounds may be required. Potential exposure to communicable diseases. Travel to provide outreach and coverage at satellite offices, to attend meetings, training sessions, and special events with the occasional overnight stay is required.
