*Salary Range: $99,424.00 – $146,286.40

PURPOSE: Provides Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification (IEAV) technical survey, document review, and special project support for complex decommissioning projects requiring special technical expertise in health physics. Plans projects and prepares reports on the results.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, perform, and oversee complex confirmatory/verification/characterization survey activities at facilities throughout the U.S. and sometimes internationally.
  • Organizes a team of 1-4 survey technicians in conducting surveys in accordance with established plans and program procedures.
  • Resolves on-site issues and modifies plans as necessary to accommodate site specific situations and conditions.
  • Travels an average of one week per month. Travel can increase significantly during busy periods and can span multiple weeks at a time.
  • Prepare formal planning and reporting documentation including data quality objective development, survey and sampling design as described in the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM), and radiological data analysis and interpretation to compare to applicable release criteria. Requires knowledge and experience in areas related to decommissioning health physics.
  • Perform technical review of documents prepared by other organizations concerning characterization and remedial action activities.
  • Special projects could include:
    • Use of off-the-shelf computer software such as RESRAD, MCNP, and MicroShield.
    • Creating and quality control of calculations (e.g., spreadsheets).
    • General quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain radiation survey instrumentation including general maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting. Prepares equipment for survey trips.
  • Assures that instrumentation is maintained and calibrated in accordance with program procedures.
  • Evaluates and recommends new equipment as appropriate.
  • Maintains all ORAU required and project-specific training and be able to work independently in the office and at field sites after procedure signoffs are complete.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Health Physics or related fields and 3 to 5 years’ experience, or bachelor’s degree in Health Physics and 5 to 7 years’ experience. Health Physics Certification is preferred.

  • Experience in Health Physics and Radiation Safety is required.
  • Experience in development of project planning documents, reports, procedures, etc. is preferred.
  • Experience performing day-to-day interaction with customers, regulators and management is preferred.
  • Experience reviewing analytical data for adequacy and accuracy is preferred.
  • Experience working on field sites performing survey and sampling activities in decommissioning and demolition (D&D) conditions.
  • Experience providing guidance and direction to field personnel.
  • Directly related experience performing duties involving:
    • Field and laboratory radiological instrumentation.
    • Radiation detection techniques.
    • Basic radiation protection and radiological instrumentation calibration.
    • Basic statistical analysis.
    • Detection system troubleshooting.
    • Instrument calibration.
  • Experience in electronics, health physics or a related field, radiation protection fundamentals, and technical or scientific writing.
  • Effective communication methods.
  • Standard practices for field documentation and records management.
  • Experience with radiation simulation codes such as RESRAD, MCNP, MicroShield, etc. to design shielding, calculate detector efficiencies, estimate radiological dose, etc.

*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
