DESCRIPTION

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Using professional engineering concepts in performing complex mechanical engineering tasks associated with the design, analysis, development, fabrication, testing, data gathering, and assembly of electrical/electronic components to support pulsed plasma experiments at UC San Diego. Responsible for performing and managing engineering technician tasks such as equipment repairs, maintenance, and installation support.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work. Graduation from college with major work in engineering and three years of engineering experience including one (1) year of responsible design work or an equivalent combination of additional education and experience.
  • Experience in high voltage instruments, high voltage power supplies and trigger units. A good knowledge of building electrical circuits.
  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Strong experience in creating professional engineering production drawings and schematics for equipment used in high vacuum, high pressure and high voltage Plasma physics research experiments.
  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Proven experience with independent decision-making and interpretations of research data.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate with other staff, students and researchers. Must be proficient in English to compose reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. Good interpersonal skills including tact, good judgment, diplomacy and flexibility to professionally interact with a diverse scientific academic researchers, professional staff, students and vendors.
  • Ability to lead and influence others.
  • In depth knowledge and extensive experience in working with ultra-high vacuum components as well as high pressure and high voltage equipment.
  • Experience with reporting research results and findings through presentations and publications.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Occasional travel to collaborating sites will be required.
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 – $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 – $68.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
