Why does the job exist?
This position operates heavy-duty equipment used to maintain, build and upgrade highways, inspect roadways, and evaluates effectiveness of the maintenance system. Position also implements measures for highway maintenance and repair using approved maintenance and construction methods. And provides technical consultations regarding repairs to road surfaces, structures, signs, drainages facilities and road debris removal.
How does it get done?
Incumbent operates a grader/blade 5¿10-yard dump truck with attachment, loaders, tractor trailer combination, roller, dozer, self-propelled broom, mower with attachments, backhoe, distributor, water truck, transport, snowplow, salt spreader, crane, lay-down machine, chip spreader and end dump. Enter employee’s daily activities into the Maintenance Management System. Approve employee’s entries in the SHARE system. Will respond to call outs and emergencies as well as snow removal operations. Respond to inquiries from the general public in a timely manner.

Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate should have experience in:
-Emergency response situations.
-Maintenance activities such as fence installation or repair, sign installation or repair, guardrail repair, roadway patching, blade patching, snow removal.
-Working as a lead worker/or working independently with minor supervision.
-One year experience in computers /entering information into Maintenance Management System, SHARE, Microsoft Outlook.
A Class A CDL is required of this position as well as a demonstrative abilities test that is held prior to formal interviews.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, blade, five and ten yard dump truck, self-propelled broom, roller, and/or mower. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.
Statutory Requirement:
Must possess a New Mexico Driver’s License and a New Mexico Class A CDL at time of hire. Post-offer Physical and Pre-Employment Drug Test are required for safety sensitive classifications.

Employment Requirements
This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License and a New Mexico Class A Commercial Driver’s License at the time of hire. Tanker endorsement may be required. Business and/or personal reference checks and driver’s license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions – hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
