Salary: $17.21 – $24.95/hr. DOQ

General Description:
The purpose of this position within the organization is to lead and participate in the fields of horticulture, and sports turf management and perform general labor duties for the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. This position will also work a schedule requiring evening and weekend shifts. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent and formal training, special courses, or self-education that is equivalent to the satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training. Two to four years of work experience is required. The equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
A valid Driver’s License is required. A Category 3 and Category 5 SC Pesticide License or complete the requirements for a Category 3 and Category 5 SC Pesticide License within 6 months of employment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of ornamental horticulture, basic landscape design, plant nomenclature, pesticide/herbicide applications and handling, basic grounds maintenance, basic irrigation maintenance, and repair.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance work.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Knowledge of modern office practices and technology.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment with skill and safety.
- Ability to effectively supervise the work of assigned crew members.
- Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Leads and participates in a variety of horticultural, groundskeeping, and custodial duties at assigned facilities; including but not limited to planting and caring for trees, shrubs, turf grass, and flowers, removing trash and/or mowing, edging, string trimming, blowing leaves and debris, applying mulch, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, stocking restrooms, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors, etc.
- Leads and directs subordinate crew workers and seasonal personnel, including instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning the work of others, maintaining standards, and coordinating activities.
- Operates and performs routine maintenance on a variety of equipment; including but not limited to vehicles, dump trucks, backhoes, mowers, tractors with implements, tillers, spreaders, string trimmers, blowers, hedge shears, edger, motorized sprayers, and chain saw; transports personnel/materials, etc.
- Procures supplies, parts, and materials required for daily maintenance and repair work.
- Assists in planning, coordinating, and supervising various projects; inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards, ensures the timely completion of all work requests.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other City employees, subordinates, suppliers/vendors, outside service providers, and the general public.
- Receives, prepares, and reviews various records and reports including work orders, equipment inventory lists, invoices, soil tests, facility inspection sheets, etc.
- Provides tournament, race, and special event support to include staffing, set up and breakdown, and coordinating with event directors and facility renters.
- Performs all other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs.
