Why does the job exist?
This position will serve as the program manager, administrator, and supervisor of the Hotshot Wildland fire crew. A primary goal of the position is to build the wildland fire crew to achieve and maintain Type 1 qualifications. This permanent position has responsibility for the deliver of a complex wildfire resource program. The position supervises, manages and provides training for
firefighters with the goal of containing and suppressing wildfires, providing wildfire and prescribed fire management, providing forest and watershed management and landscape restoration activities, and conducting natural resource projects.
How does it get done?
The position is responsible for complex administrative actions and works with several interagency programs and a variety of stakeholders, partners, and constituents. The position requires training, physical conditioning at a high level and mentoring of crew members. The position may be designated to represent a District, the Resource Protection Bureau, and EMNRD-Forestry
Division. The position will: (1) manage and direct high complexity incidents, including prescribed burning, with numerous and varied resources with decisions and activities that include fire management, prevention and outreach/education, training, scheduling, delegating duties, monitoring, review work and implementing corrective action and development of procedures for
programmatic efficiency and success; (2) supervise program personnel including hiring, determining workload, delegating duties and responsibilities, developing and implementing training, monitoring and evaluating performance and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions as warranted; and (3) oversee and manage all administrative aspects of program including purchasing,
finance, budget, payroll, labor management, compiling and maintaining records and logs, completing forms, providing training on administrative processes, preparing reports, and corresponding with internal and external partners, both orally and in writing.
Who are the customers?
The job will service the citizens of the state of New Mexico to ensure the management and protection of the State’s forests, watersheds, and natural resources. There are numerous customers serviced to include state, private, local government, federal, tribal, non profit, non-governmental and intra-state customers.
Ideal Candidate
-Experience in wildland fire suppression or prescribed burning operations of at least 7 seasons.
– Experience including 3 seasons or years of supervisory experience.
– Fully NWCG qualified as Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR), Task Force Leader (TFLD), Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3), and Prescribed Burn Boss 2 (RXB2).
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in wildland fire science or related natural resource degree and two (2) years supervisory experience and five (5) years of experience in wildland fire or prescribed burning operations. Must be a NWCG trainee or fully qualified as a Task Force Leader (TFLD) and Incident Command Type 4 (ICT4) and Single Resource such as Firing Boss (FIRB), as specified in PMS 310-1. Experience and qualifications may substitute for education.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
Working Conditions
Work will be a mixture of office and field settings, exposure to visual/video display terminal, computer and other hand-held and electronic devises for extended periods; but will also include extensive field settings with exposure to extreme weather and environmental conditions and hazards including smoke, dust, insects, animals, wildland fire, heavy equipment, mechanized equipment, noise, in remote and rugged terrain in variable weather conditions. Ability to conduct long duration strenuous physical labor, hiking, while carrying up to 45lbs for extended periods of time up to 16-hrs per day. Diving motor vehicles and operating utility vehicles, hand tools, chainsaws and other power tools may be required.
