DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Assistant Manager of Mechanical Engineering, an HVAC Apprentice performs skilled work maintaining and repairing heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. An employee in this class, with general technical, and administrative supervision from an assigned supervisor, trouble-shoots, repairs and maintains heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems while working with an experienced HVAC Technician. An HVAC Apprentice will be actively enrolled in an Apprenticeship Program registered with and approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council (MATC) in accordance with laws and regulations established by the State of Maryland’s Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation (DLLR).

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs complex work involving troubleshooting, investigation, and repair of HVAC equipment and controls with assistance of an HVAC Technician.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of HVAC equipment with assistance of an HVAC Technician.
  • Observes safety precautions.
  • Must complete an Apprenticeship Program registered with and approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council (MATC) in accordance with laws and regulations established by the State of Maryland’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). The Apprentice Program provides employees the opportunity to complete a combination of formal classroom instruction and on the job training to enhance their career growth. A written agreement between HCPSS and the employee must be completed prior to enrollment in the Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program will be funded by the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS).
  • After an HVAC Apprentice successfully completes the Apprenticeship Program with a passing grade, the HVAC Apprentice will advance to an HVAC Technician position within the HCPSS.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and skills of electrical and mechanical components and functions of HVAC systems.
  • Ability to correctly and safely use all tools associated with the trade.
  • Ability to comprehend written, verbal, and visual directions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, climb, and use arm and hand movements.
  • Ability to carry tools and to handle materials and equipment of 80 to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights on aerial lifts, scaffolding, stepladders and/or extension ladders.
  • Ability to crawl in, under, over, or through equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all the following qualifications, listed below, to be considered for the vacancy.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Minimum age of 18 years old.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior or current coursework that aligns with HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Two years of paid experience in HVAC maintenance work, or graduation from a high school vocational technical program with an emphasis on HVAC systems.

LICENSURE

  • Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Certification or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of a Maryland Class C driver’s license and satisfactory driving record with 2 or less points on your record.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL

  • The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected by the Howard County Department of Education.

EMPLOYEE SAFETY

  • The employee is responsible for using safety devices and protective equipment to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. The employee is also responsible for using safe practices and methods in the operation of equipment and supplies related to this job. The employee is further responsible for correcting and/or reporting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students or staff members assigned to the building.
  • The employee is responsible for the safety and maintenance condition of their assigned vehicle.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Current High Schools Seniors will be considered for the position, but any offer of employment will be contingent upon obtaining the required diploma. Proof of possession of the required diploma must be submitted by June 20th, 2023.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
This is a 12-month per year position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) employee bargaining unit. This position is Grade 7 on the Audio Visual/ Grounds/ Maintenance/ Warehouse salary scale, $21.75 to $38.84 per hour. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the AFSCME Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is non-exempt.
