Job Description:

The Operations group consists of over 325 staff from all nationalities and backgrounds. These team members are dedicated to providing high quality facilities and grounds maintenance along with construction and document support services to our campus community. We continually strive to enhance the appearance, operation, and functional life of UF facilities.

This highly skilled professional will be responsible for installing, operating, repairing, and preventively maintaining pneumatic/electric digital air conditioning (A/C) and refrigeration equipment; servicing and refurbishing all types of A/C and refrigeration equipment, including controls systems that are connected directly to, and operate, field devices.

Some of the job duties may include, but not be limited to:
• troubleshooting field-connected devices,
• repairing or replacing valves, piping, thermostats, dampers, grills, turning vanes, motors, belts, and controls,
• overhauling compressors, condensers, and other equipment,
• recharging and recovering refrigerants in refrigeration systems, and
• performing and overseeing HVAC construction projects and departmental jobs utilizing blueprints and schematics

The incumbent in this role will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by serving as a mentor and training lower-level technicians through shared knowledge transfer, skills development, guidance, and goal setting.

Individuals who are not currently NCCER Certified will be supported in their successful completion of:
• NCCER Knowledge Verification and NCCER HVAC Performance Verification within 4 months of hire
• Trade specific Critical Task Assessment within 4 months of hire, and
• Completion of the NCCER Core within 6 months of hire.

Drives a state vehicle that requires a valid driver license.

A criminal background and post-offer health assessment will be conducted.

Schedule: M-F 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Emergency work (as needed), Swing shift/on-call/standby (as required)

Position considered as Essential Personnel as defined by UF Policy

Expected Salary:

Expecting starting salary $22.00 – $25.00 hourly based on experience.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of HVAC apprenticeship program (or equivalent) and four years of appropriate experience in HVAC related work; appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Refrigerant Recovery certification (prior to hire)

Currently Certified/ Licensed in HVAC trade or Associates Degree in HVAC plus 2 years relevant experience in trade or pass NCCER Knowledge Verification and NCCER HVAC Performance Verification within 6 months
Pass trade specific Critical Task Assessment within 6 months.
Complete NCCER Core within 6 months

Preferred Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE: 6 Years field experience

KNOWLEDGE:
– Knowledge of the most modern and improved materials and techniques (to insure the most professional and cost effective HVAC as possible)
– Demonstrable working knowledge of blueprints and schematic drawings
– Knowledge of/familiarity with control systems

SKILLS:
– Skilled in troubleshooting pneumatic and electric/digital devices related to refrigeration and A/C equipment
– Skilled in using normal and up-to-date equipment and materials
– Skilled in soldering refrigerant and water piping/tubing
– Skilled in recovering refrigerant

ABILITIES:
– Ability to follow established safety practices and procedures
– Demonstrable ability to recognize the proper materials/equipment needed for a specific job and make necessary changes
– Demonstrable ability to read a service request
– Ability to read work requests
– Ability to troubleshoot equipment following the proper control sequence of operation
