Official Position Description:

In the Office of Structural Engineering, acts as Bridge Standards Engineer staff specialist (i.e., develops engineering policies & plans projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have significant impact on major organizational programs, keeps abreast of new scientific methods & developments affecting department & recommends changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted, implements departmental policies & programs in administration of contracts involving multiple complex projects, programs & directives & develops &/or revises policies & directives based on field observation & testing). Researches, evaluates, develops, & implements policy for the design, construction, maintenance & rehabilitation of bridges & structures for the Standard Bridge Drawings publication & other ODOT publications (e.g., Construction & Material Specifications, Supplemental Specifications, Proposal Notes, Design Data Sheets & Plan Insert Sheets). Provides technical support for bridge policy to internal & external customers (e.g., District Planning, Production & Construction offices; & Central Office Divisions of Planning, Engineering & Construction, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), consultants, local governments, & contractors). Prepares plans & designs for multiple complex projects using computer & related software (e.g., Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD). Serves as a technical liaison on research projects; reviews construction & design submittals for conformance with ODOT specifications & design manuals. Provides budgetary information to supervisor; researches, & makes recommendations to assist with long-range planning for section. Operates state vehicle to travel to project sites. Signs plans & other engineering documents as a registered professional engineer & conducts quality assurance reviews.

Independently generates & signs names to external correspondence (e.g., inquiries, investigations, acknowledgements) to consultants, governmental units, private industries, & general public on matters related to Bridge Standards. Reviews construction & design submittals for conformance with ODOT specifications & design manuals. Serves as the Departments representative on the Transportation Pooled Fund TPF-5(372) Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Bridges & Structures. Attends meetings & serves on internal &/or external committees as assigned. Uses computer & related software (e.g., MS Office Suite) to review & comment on research reports. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Engineer 3, 85643; if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver’s license.

-Or licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 2 yrs. exp. as group or project leader or supervisor providing work direction & training to employees engaged in engineering projects or 2 yrs. exp. in managing engineering research projects (i.e., managing research projects applies only to staff specialist positions); if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver’s license.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated registration.
