Program Summary: The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), Division of Disease Control (DDC), works to prevent, control, and report on diseases and conditions that are contagious and/or affect the public’s health. DDC helps prepare for public health emergencies and educate the community on how to stay safe and healthy.
The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Immunizations program in the Division of Disease Control, oversees the purchase and distribution of federally funded vaccines to local healthcare providers. As one of 64 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded program areas, the Philadelphia Immunization Program is charged with the mission to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases and increase the immunization coverage levels among infants, children, adolescents and adults in Philadelphia.
Job Description: The Philadelphia Immunization Program is seeking a full-time Communications Coordinator. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for all the Immunization Program’s communications material. This includes public-facing communications campaigns to promote vaccines, as well as a comprehensive suite of guidance and technical assistance for the city’s health care providers.
The Communications Coordinator will supervise the communications team which includes a Graphic and Web Designer, a Health Communications Specialist, and a Communications Assistant Coordinator.
The Communications Coordinator reports directly to the Immunization Program Manager. This position will require at minimum two-days in office, with the possibility to work remotely up to three days per week.

Responsibilities:
- Create and implement a strategic communications plan for the Immunization Program, centered around creating easy-to-use information for different target audiences and a clear vision for the services that the Immunization Program provides.
- Supervise three (3) communications professionals.
- Write, edit, design, and distribute communications for healthcare providers.
- Create public-facing health communications campaigns, synthesizing research and Program goals into a clear communications plan and writing, designing, finalizing, distributing, and evaluating all health communications products.
- Maintain all program documents, forms, and materials, and continue a strategy of converting PDFs to web forms and web content.
- Assist in maintaining the Immunization Program’s websitehttps://vaccines.phila.gov/, which is currently a WordPress platform.
- Assist in maintaining contact list for all Immunization Program partners and healthcare providers, with email and fax numbers.
- Organize internal communications.
- Collaborate with other coordinators and their staff to ensure they have the communications support needed for their program/project.
- Work with the Immunization team and complete other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate across PDPH programs to assist in the development of communications tools as needed.
- Support Division wide initiatives and emergency preparedness activities, as might be required.
Skills:
- Must have experience with health communications, including knowledge of health communications research, theories, and experience developing health communications products.
- Must be an excellent and efficient writer with experience writing health, medical, and technical information in plain language.
- Must know how to interpret medical and technical information as well as research medical topics and present such information clearly and effectively for a variety of audiences.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn web content management using WordPress.
- Must have experience managing staff.
- Must know how to manage projects.
Experience:
- Must have a Master’s in Public Health (or a related field) and 2 years of experience OR
- A Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in communications, journalism, design, or a related field, including graphics design and website content management.
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
- Must be authorized to work legally in the US.
Education Requirement:
- Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years in communications, journalism, graphic design (or a related field) or 2 years of experience with a Master’s degree.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to synthesize research.
- Must have experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud (InDesign), WordPress content management system, and other communications tools.
- The position requires attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to organize and present information effectively, at times under tight deadlines.
- Candidate should also have excellent English language skills, including composition, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and usage.
- Individuals should be able to work independently or within a team environment.
- Must be able to interact successfully with all levels of healthcare professionals and with a diverse public on a variety of disciplines.
Desired Qualifications:
- Writing experience that includes development/marketing, risk communication, and development of plain language materials.
- Additional experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications is desired (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
- Ability to translate scientific and medical information into graphics and visuals.
- Knowledge of additional languages, particularly Spanish.
