Parklane SUN is currently seeking Inclusion Assistants to work one-on-one to support students during the Summer SUN enrichment program at Butler Creek Elementary. Due to the nature of the position, staff need to be flexible and able to think on their feet. Inclusion Assistants act as an aide in the overall setting of the program, supporting students on an individual basis that aligns with their needs, and working to ensure that all students can access the SUN program equitably. Applicants do not need specific experience working in a one-on-one setting. However, we will prioritize those that have experience working with children and people with special needs.

SUN Inclusion Assistants will work in the classrooms with Activity Leaders but will be responsible for 1-3 students specifically and supervising their experience from the first moments of programming until dismissal. SUN Inclusion Assistants are a part of the SUN Team and will be expected and invited to attend trainings, participate in program development, and assist with daily program management duties during meal times, etc.

Position Dates: From July 10-28, 11:30am-3:30pm

Summary of Position:

Inclusion Assistants act as an aide in the overall setting of the program, supporting students on an individual basis that aligns with their needs, and working to ensure that all students can access the SUN program equitably. Applicants do not need specific experience working in a one-on-one setting. However, we will prioritize those that have experience working with children and people with special needs.

He or she will work directly with the SUN Site Manager, Principal, school staff, and students. Activity Leaders are part time, temporary employees of Metropolitan Family Service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Co-Supervise groups of 12-15 students while maintaining school-appropriate class decorum.
  • Supervise groups during daily routines such as meal time, recess, bathroom breaks, and class transitions.
  • Maintain classroom and school rules to ensure students are safe.
  • Communicate frequently with the SUN Site Manager about individual student progress, successes and concerns. Keep the SUN Site Manager informed about overall class development and needed support.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with students, families, school staff, and custodians.
  • Work within school and agency policies. Protect student confidentiality
  • Attend SUN Activity Leader training prior to start of SUN term to review Discipline, Restorative Justice and Trauma Informed Care Principles, Emergency protocols, Lesson Plan expectations, and build community among staff team
  • Work collaboratively with 3-5 other SUN Activity Leaders to promote a positive, growth oriented extended day programming that addresses the needs and strengths of a diverse group of students and families

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Experience in working 1-1 or in small groups with elementary children with additional needs
  • Desire and ability to work with children and ensure an enriching, positive, safe setting
  • An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual
  • Excellent organization skills and interpersonal communication skills
  • A cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team
  • A willingness to ask questions for clarification and job completion
  • Demonstrate excitement in working with children. Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm about working in an inclusive environment which serves children of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Experience working with groups of elementary-age children and strong behavior management is a MUST
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States (documentation will be required for I-9 form)
  • Spanish speaking skills are a plus
  • Basic English proficiency is required (must be able to read, write and speak English)
  • All employees must submit a criminal background check

Hours:

Mon-Fri 11:30am-3:30 pm

Term:

Summer SUN program will run July 10-28 at Butler Creek Elementary. Additional Training days prior to the first day of programming will be requested in July. Position may have an option of continuing for future school terms. SUN inclusion assistants are part-time, temporary employees of Metropolitan Family Service.

Compensation:

$17-18/hr depending on experience
