About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):

The Indiana Department of Revenue team is comprised of over 700 staff that are located in 13 locations across the state of Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor’s office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and a variety of tax program participants to administer Indiana’s tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws in a fair, secure, and efficient manner.

Salary:

This position starts at an annual salary of $47,320 with a potential opportunity for adjustment based on the relevant experience and skillset of the applicant. The Department utilizes three different auditor-level classifications based on acquired competencies and demonstrated skill sets. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The general purpose of this position is to assist auditors in the preparation of audit work papers, research, and computer system support. This position will also assist auditors in determining that customer accounts are correct and accurate. You will work to ensure the highest level of customer focus with a strong commitment to continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency, and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.

Key outcomes for this role are:

  • Provide customer service by communicating in person, by telephone, or in writing, instructing and furnishing information pertaining to various tax types administered and collected by the State Revenue Department.
  • Perform account and financial maintenance which may result in creating and/or canceling liabilities, transferring payments, establishing payment arrangements, setting and releasing holds on liabilities, and contacting taxpayers concerning errors, delinquencies, or overpayments in ITS and other related systems.
  • Verify payments, credits, and deductions claimed on various tax returns in ITS and other related systems, and compute and issue billings due to underpayment or nonpayment of taxes in ITS and other related systems.
  • Processes original and amended tax returns and forms as necessary to properly reflect the results of reviews and examinations.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, taxpayer representatives, other divisions within agency, and other state agencies.
  • Review accounts and properly apply payments to taxpayer accounts as needed.
  • Conduct extensive research to resolve complex issues related to payments and/or returns for taxpayers, including research in DOR’s software and database applications for unpaid/unfiled tax liabilities.
  • Review and close files paid in full, dismissed, or discharged.
  • Create billings/liabilities in DOR’s software and database applications according to court orders. abates penalties and interest accordingly.
  • Assist with evidence collection process in Investigations cases, including preparation of documents to establish continuity of custody for items of evidence to ensure that judicial requirements are met.
  • Complete disclosure requests for confidential taxpayer information by performing a thorough review of the request and analyzing the Department’s records.

What You’ll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Six (6) years of experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or customer service.
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations applying to each of the several types of taxes.
  • Specialized knowledge of accounting and auditing techniques used by businesses and industries.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
