This recruitment is being conducted to fill a current vacancy and also establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.
Under general supervision, provides technical support for the City’s computers, network, Geographic Information System (GIS), and web systems; office software, computer hardware, and user support related to the City’s computer network and phone systems; maintains the integrity and operability of the network infrastructure; and assists in the analysis and troubleshooting of City-wide network problems related to computer and telephone networks; responds to PC and related hardware and software trouble calls.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Information Technology Assistant receives immediate supervision from Information Technology Manager. May received functional supervision from their designee.
Distinguishing Characteristics

The Information Technology Assistant classification is an entry-level position within the IT Division. The classification, in addition to general duties, has three specific areas that they may be assigned to: Police IT, Audio/Visual (A/V), and City Help Desk. The assignments are not guaranteed and may be rotated at any time based on the needs of the organization.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides routine LAN administration, backups and restores.
- Installs, maintains, and upgrades terminals and PCs, including related hardware and software.
- Tests and installs new applications on the network.
- Makes recommendations to IT Manager for new hardware and software options.
- Maintains Benicia PC and laptop inventory.
- Asset tags all physical hardware.
- Responsible for managing e-waste collection and pick up in all Benicia facilities.
- Responsible for collecting and disposing the used printer toners.
- Maintains the tech room and ensure adequate supply of common computer hardware equipment is maintained.
- Responds to Mobile Data Computer, PC and LAN trouble calls; diagnoses and repairs routine hardware and software problems.
- Assists in diagnosing and resolving major system problems; installs, tests and maintains network cabling.
- Participates in technical documentation; creates and maintains technical documents including network layout, configuration, and instructions.
- Trains users on basic software and hardware operation.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Additional duties based on division assignment:
Police IT Support:
- Provides specialized IT support to the Police Department, including installing and maintaining law enforcement software and systems.
- Assists with setting up and troubleshooting police-specific hardware and software, such as computer-aided dispatch systems, record management systems, and camera systems.
Audiovisual (AV) Support:
- Assists with the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audiovisual equipment used in conference rooms, training rooms, and other designated areas.
- Provides technical support during meetings, presentations, and events, ensuring that AV systems function correctly and any issues are promptly resolved.
- Collaborates with internal teams to evaluate and implement new AV technologies and equipment as needed.
- Provides support for the audio/video system in Council chambers.
- Assists with audio and video productions.
- This position requires a flexible schedule to ensure meetings in the evenings or on the weekends can be monitored.
City Helpdesk Support:
- Serves as the first point of contact for internal employees seeking technical assistance over the phone, via email, helpdesk, or in person.
- Provides remote and on-site support to users, diagnosing and resolving technical issues promptly.
- Escalates complex problems to the appropriate IT personnel and ensures prompt resolution.
- Assists in maintaining and updating the helpdesk ticketing system, documenting support requests, resolutions, and follow-up actions.
Representative Duties / Qualifications
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles of computer system design, operations, and control.
- Computer and telecommunications standards.
- PC and server hardware and peripherals, including installation, troubleshooting and repair procedures.
- Diagnostic software and testing equipment and techniques.
- Backup scheduling and maintenance.
- Computer environments, including Microsoft operating systems.
- Telecommunications, including LAN topologies, hubs, routers, bridges, modems, and firewalls; telephones and pagers.
- Computer application software, especially, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.
Ability to:
- Obtain and maintain all necessary security approvals for access to City facilities and assigned systems, including law enforcement work areas and applications.
- Understand and comply with policies, procedures and regulations, including data confidentiality and privacy restrictions.
- Communicate clearly and easily with users and vendors of varying levels of technical expertise.
- Train end-users in the use of hardware and software products.
- Assemble and install computer equipment; maintain and upgrade hardware.
- Handle and prioritize scheduled and emergency projects, including end-use trouble calls.
- Quickly learn and use a variety of technologies, peripherals, and software.
- Backup and restore files over a network.
- Administer LAN servers on a day-to-day basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the require knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- A minimum of (1) one year progressively responsible experience in PC and LAN maintenance, including demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting multiple PCs, cabling and at least one server connected as a local area network in an office environment is required.
- Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Education:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- College level course work in computer science, telecommunications, or a related field, or completion of Microsoft-certified Windows client and Server operating system courses is desired.
- An Associate’s degree in computer science, telecommunications, or a related field is preferred. A college degree may be substituted for the required experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; operate office equipment including use of computer keyboard; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to speak and hear to exchange information; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; ability to operate and use specialized tools and equipment; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
LICENSE AND/OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required.
- Must be able to successfully pass a POST required background check.
- Must be able to maintain the same level of security as when first hired. Failure to maintain this level of security clearance is grounds for dismissal.
