Description
To provide hands-on academic support to students and instructors in the Photography lab; works cooperatively with instructors to ensure academic objectives are met; to assist to train students in proper applications and techniques of photography; and to perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the lab.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is distinguished from other classes within the Instructional Support Assistant II job series in the provision of hands-on academic support to students and instructors in photography. Incumbents in this classification are fully trained and thoroughly knowledgeable.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from an assigned supervisor.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide hands- academic support to students and instructors; tutors students in various aspects of photography and film developing techniques and procedures.
- Serve as liaison between students and instructor; confer with instructors regarding academic progress of specific students; inform instructor of certain questions being asked and discuss various academic matters.
- Prepare demonstrations for photography students;
- Maintain, dispose of, order and maintain photography and developing chemicals and supplies in a safe manner; arrange for the disposal of hazardous waste.
- Perform preventive maintenance on photography equipment; arrange to send equipment to off-site locations for repairs.
- Conduct laboratory orientation and explain laboratory and program procedures, goals and objectives; obtain student information and educational background.
- Collect, compile and maintain a variety of statistical information and data including attendance hours, tutor schedules and student records; prepare appropriate reports as requested.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Operations, procedures, goals and objectives of the photo lab.
- Methods and techniques of photography and film developing.
- Standard office, classroom and laboratory procedures and equipment including computers and associated software applications.
- Methods and techniques of student instruction and tutoring.
- Proper language usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Principles and practices of filing and record keeping.
- Appropriate and effective communication and listening skills.
- Various lighting equipment usage, including strobes, soft boxes and power supplies.
Ability to:
- Provide hands-on academic support to students and instructors in photography.
- Respond to a variety of requests for assistance from students and instructors.
- Listen effectively and appropriately assess student academic needs.
- Work with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ages and academic abilities.
- Maintain and dispose of photography and developing chemicals and supplies in a safe manner.
- Serve as liaison among students, tutors and instructor.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
- Sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of computer keyboard; work with chemicals and hazardous materials.
Education and Experience Requirements
Education:
Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent and 18 units of college coursework in photography or related subject; Associate’s degree in photography preferred.
Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience with at least one year of experience tutoring or performing academic support functions.
