Duties

Engineering/Science Analysts in the Directorate for Engineering support the National Science Foundation’s mission to promote the progress of science. Engineering/Science Analysts employ data science, data analytics, visualization, and an array of multimedia communication tools to justify and support recommendations and decisions in support of this aim.

The Engineering/Science Analyst will provide analytic support for activities and programs within the CBET Division. The position will encompass a wide spectrum of duties in support of the Division’s mission, including the analysis of scientific and technical issues to provide recommendations influencing policy and process administration. The Engineering/Science Analyst works with a team of colleagues to provide in-depth scientific and technical analysis, documentation and visualization of the Division research portfolio, and data and analyses to inform funding recommendations and science policy making decisions. The employee will also coordinate and support outreach activities for the Division. These activities will involve daily interactions with staff throughout the Division, Directorate, other Directorates, other Federal Government research organizations and coordinating groups, as well as the research and small business communities.

Typical duties of the Engineering/Science Analyst will include compiling and evaluating data in support of research portfolio analysis; conducting the necessary research to develop one-of-a-kind reports, studies, and analyses on scientific/engineering topics supported by the Division; assisting in the creation of presentations, including talking points, speeches, or presentation slides; supporting and participating in outreach activities for the Division; assisting in the merit review and award oversight processes as appropriate; and working with program officers to develop logic models for program assessment and evaluation.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in an appropriate Engineering or Science field; OR a Master’s degree in an appropriate Engineering or Science field plus after award of the degree, two or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. You must identify the date that your degree was obtained.

Appropriate fields within the Engineering fields would include chemical, mechanical, civil, biomedical, environmental, aerospace, and engineering policy. Appropriate fields within the Science fields would include chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and mathematics.

Excellent written and oral communication skills for interaction with senior engineers, scientists, and researchers are highly desired, as is the ability to gather, evaluate, analyze and synthesize engineering and scientific data for effective presentation of results. Proficiency with commercial statistical and data management software packages for database management, data compilation and processing are expected. Expertise with coding and statistical analysis is preferred.
