Summary
The Communications & Marketing Specialist will work with stakeholders inside of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Division and external collaborators, under supervision of the Communications and Marketing Manager, to carry out marketing-related duties focused on advancing the mission, awareness, reputation, and perception of CSE.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to implement an external communications and marketing plan and to manage special communication projects, publications, events, and social media activities.

Responsibilities*
Works in a highly collaborative team environment to develop effective, efficient, and more integrated ways to promote the research, educational, and other activities taking place at CSE to the attention of key internal and external audiences.
- Write stories and announcements that highlight the impact of research findings and projects, events, and accomplishments of faculty, students, staff, and alumni of CSE, and which help the Division to build and maintain a healthy community
- Plan, develop, and/or direct photography or graphics to accompany story content
- Organize, present, and keep current information on multiple websites
- Develop a social media strategy and execute social media posts/campaigns
- Create announcements and invitations via an email marketing system
- Design and produce flyers and content for digital screens
- Design and produce department print publications
- Plan and assist in the development of Division videos
- Take photographs at Division events
- Coordinate and communicate with other Division staff members and stakeholders about communications plans and activities.
- Collaborate with other communicators at the College of Engineering and across campus as needed, including the College’s central Communications and marketing team
- Additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or similar program and/or equivalent education or experience
- One to three years of applicable experience in a communications position
- Strong writing, editing, and interviewing skills, as well as an ability to research and confirm new or specialized topics
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- A desire and ability to work successfully in an engaged team environment, as well as to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to set priorities, handle multiple assignments and negotiate deadlines all while being customer-service oriented
- A high degree of familiarity with social media platforms, tools, and best practices
- Ability to work/collaborate in Google suite of docs/sheets/slides
- Experience working with graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
- An understanding of how graphics and documents are prepared for print and digital use
- Experience with a website content management system such as WordPress
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience working in higher education, preferably in an academic department.
- Familiarity with U-M communications environment and brand standards.
- Ability to shoot and/or edit video
- Knowledge of printing process
- Basic knowledge of html and website technologies
- Experience with email marketing systems

A hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based on the responsibilities of the position as defined by the Communications and Marketing Manager, the needs of the Division, and University guidelines.
Work Locations
Computer Science & Engineering operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a FLEX position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 2-3 days per week and working remotely the rest of the week.
