The Office of Internationalization provides leadership and support for the University of Denver’s efforts to internationalize the curriculum and the campus. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) supports internationalization at the University of Denver by serving as a resource to students, faculty, and staff in meeting the needs of the international community on campus through programming and immigration services.
Position Summary:
The International Student Advisor is a full-time non-exempt, benefited position and reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
The International Student Advisor advises international students on immigration status and regulations; cultural adjustment and academic culture; English language matters; financial issues; orienting to life in the U.S.; and navigating the campus and community. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and processes student requests for immigration benefits. The position serves as back up to the Sr. Advisor and SEVIS Coordinator for the university’s reporting and compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of State (DOS) requirements.
The International Student Advisor supports the International Community and Programming Coordinator (ICPC) to issue immigration documents to newly admitted international students and with social and cultural programming and orientation. The position works with international student groups to develop leadership and capacity.
Essential Functions:
General international student advising and immigration compliance: 60%
- Advises non-immigrant students on immigration regulations including maintenance of legal status, employment authorization, international travel, extensions of stay and changes of status, etc.
- Evaluates complex situations involving multiple stakeholders (student, university, government agencies) and advises on courses of action.
- Functions as legal signatory of immigration documents (I-20s and DS-2019s) for F and J international students granting or recommending benefits such as employment authorization and reduced course load.
- Acts as a liaison with university departments and government agencies to resolve complex immigration-related issues.
- Advises international students on personal, academic, financial, and cultural issues to support academic and personal success.
- Uses cross-cultural communication skills to work effectively with non-immigrant students, faculty, and staff and to communicate complex matters to non-native speakers of English.
- Provides education, support, and guidance about and on behalf of international students to DU faculty and staff and the larger university community
- Serves as the primary point of contact for the Sponsored Student Program
Programming & Orientation: 25%
- Coordinate with ICPC to design and deliver 4 international student orientations annually
- In conjunction with ICPC, create and send pre-arrival information to incoming students
- Assist with social and cultural programming and social media outreach
- Develop leadership and capacity in international student groups
Office Support: 15%
- Serve as back-up to SEVIS manager for SEVIS data compliance
- Serve on campus committees as needed
- Staff I-House Front Desk as needed
- Other duties as assigned/as needed, due to changes in work environment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate complex terms and topics with non-native speakers of English.
- Strong interpersonal/intercultural communication skills; strong writing and editing skills.
- Flexible work style and ability to work independently and creatively with minimal supervision in a team setting and time-sensitive environment.
- Ability to work with diverse international student populations.
- Strong computer and database management skills.
- Detail-oriented and organized.
- Demonstrated compassion and understanding of the challenges faced by international students and scholars.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
- 1 year of experience working with international students. Study Abroad experience cannot substitute for this experience
- 1 year of experience working in an office environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of immigration regulations
- Higher education work experience
- U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence (required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State to serve as a DSO and ARO)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an international-related field
- NAFSA F-1 Beginner’s Certificate
- Experience as a DSO and/or ARO
- 3 years of experience working in an international student office
- Demonstrated experience with some or all of the following: SEVIS, Terra Dotta ISSS, Banner, SLATE, SARSGrid, Mail Chimp, Qualtrics, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated experience with event planning

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 7.
Hourly Range:
The hourly range for this position is $23.00 – $26.50.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
