Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

New Mexico Historic Sites (NMHS) provides visitors meaningful engagement around local history. The Interpretive Ranger is a key part of the interpretive team at Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites, providing visitors with a welcoming, safe, and pleasant experience at the sites. The Interpretive Ranger is a visible, active face to the site, greeting visitors, providing tours, processing admissions, and supporting the volunteer docent team. Interpretive Rangers also take the lead on site maintenance and preservation duties, including trail work, adobe repair, and other maintenance activities.

How does it get done?

Interpretive Rangers spend much of their time with the public, greeting visitors, orienting them to the site, answering questions, and ensuring the site and visitors are safe and secure. Rangers provide tours, both planned and impromptu, for groups and individual visitors. To prepare for this, Interpretive Rangers may do extensive research to support planning and executing tours, programs, and events. Rangers also participate in the planning and carrying out of major annual events at both Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites. The Interpretive Ranger will also support the volunteer guide program through scheduling, training, answering questions, and other assistance.

Site administration and maintenance duties are a core part of the Interpretive Ranger role. These duties include tracking maintenance of equipment, planning for and carrying out seasonal maintenance of the site, historic structure and ruins, and trails, as well as managing financial reports. Rangers also take the lead on preparing the site for visitors, including janitorial tasks, weeding, and monitoring safety and security of exhibits, site structures, trails, and public programs and protocols. All NMHS participate in admissions ticketing, but Rangers take the lead on scheduling and staffing the ticket station. In addition, all NMHS staff are responsible for timely and effective administrative duties, friendly visitor service, and on-going site maintenance. This may include event management, trail maintenance, janitorial duties, snow and ice removal, admissions, and a wide range of financial and administrative record-keeping. All staff pitch in on all areas of interpretation and site maintenance and must display flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and needs.

Who are the customers?

Customers include a wide range of learners who visit Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites. Adult and school groups are a primary set of visitors Interpretive Rangers will serve. Local history enthusiasts and both in-state and national tourists comprise another important set of learners served by this position, both directly and via volunteer interpreters.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, History, or Education (preferred); experience working with diverse communities in a customer service or educational setting; developing and implementing interpretive programming, tours, or events for a range of audiences; and bilingual proficiency.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor’s degree as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and one (1) year of experience working at historic sites, parks, museums, cultural centers, visitor centers as a tour guide, lecturer, educator, or interpretive/educational ranger to include experience in historic preservation and/or general maintenance. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

• Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in office and outdoor settings. Exposure to varying weather conditions while giving tours and carrying out site maintenance during different parts of the year; exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT); and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some work takes place in a fast-paced, public-facing setting, with large crowds and visitors of a wide range of identities, needs, and abilities. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
