Job Summary
As a Protection Engineering Principal Staff Engineer at PSEGLI in the Protection Engineer department, you will utilize a host of protection principles, practices and tools to develop protection schemes, develop settings for protective relays and perform analysis of protection on the LIPA T&D system. You will utilize your advanced knowledge of Protection concepts to both perform and help lead and develop less experienced Analysis Engineers for the following:
Job Responsibilities
Calculate relay settings for Transmission Lines, Buses, Transformers, Breaker Failure, Reclosing, Low Pressure, Programmable Logic Controllers, Synch check, Phase Angle Regulators (PAR), Capacitor Banks and Shunt Reactors.
Maintain NERC Standard Compliance for the Protection and Control (PRC) and other standards and prepare for audits.
Analyze system disturbances as requested by Operations and make recommendations for change if required. Assist with writing the relay operation portion of the root cause analysis report.
Calculate distance to fault for underground cables. Perform short circuit and area relay coordination studies to accommodate system expansions and upgrades.
Calculate the coefficients of grounding (COG) for lightning arrestor selection. Provide support to other areas within Transmission & Distribution groups in the development of major equipment specification e.g. transformers, breakers, switchgear etc. and construction specifications for work being outsourced to contractors.
Perform arc flash studies from 480V through 345kV to assure proper PPE /work methods are utilized.
Develop relay settings for mobile generation, mobile switchgear and mobile transformers during system emergencies.
Perform specification review and design review with equipment vendors. Provide field support and resolve any relay setting issues brought up by relay technicians. Provide technical assistance to other departments e.g. Electric System Operations, Electric Service. Calculate substation ground potential rise (GPR).
Review Transmission Independent Power Producers (HVDC, Statcoms, Synchronous generation, renewable energy, battery storage) interconnect drawings and protective relay settings for compliance with LIPA transmission interconnect standards.
Calculate transmission line impedances for 23, 33, 69, 138 and 345kV Lines. Calculate temporary relay settings for System Operations for system clearances and/or emergencies. Develop relay logic diagrams and maintain relay setting databases. Perform fuse sizing/coordination studies.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required:
(Note: Current PSEGLI employees must meet PSEGLI Grade 28 Engineer matrix requirements in addition to required years of professional experience listed below.)
BS in Electrical Engineering
Professional Engineer License and/or one of the following advance degrees:
- Masters Degree in Engineering from ATBE Accredited University, Masters of Business Administration or Energy Management or Advanced Degree (Economics, Computer Science, 2nd Engineering)
Minimum of 6 years’ of electric power systems engineering experience.
Working knowledge of applicable codes (example: ANSI, IEEE, ASTM, NEC, NESC, etc.) and regulatory requirements (NERC/FERC/NPCC).
Experience leading a technical team with major accountabilities.
Demonstrated leadership on high visibility projects or functions.
Effective problem-solving and decision-making; strong planning and organizing skills; must be adaptable and be results-oriented.
Proven Subject matter expert in formal industry recognized role (e.g. Designated NERC Audit SME, Participation in Litigation as an Expert Witness, Chairman or Formal Leadership Role in Industry Stakeholder Group , and/or Formal Leadership in IEEE/Standards Working Groups – minimum 1 year in position).
Must possess and maintain a US drivers license with a safe and satisfactory driving history.
