Summary
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) is seeking a full-time Managing Director to join the IRIS Research Support Team. This position is supported by external sources including grants and contracts. The successful candidate will bring robust marketing and management expertise and a strong customer service orientation to a fast-paced team.
IRIS is a national consortium of research universities contributing administrative data on the direct cost expenditures of research to understand, explain, and improve the public value of higher education. IRIS is part of the Innovation, Networks, and Knowledge (INK) program at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan. Some travel will be required for this position.
Responsibilities*
Stakeholder/Partner Relationship Development & Management . The Managing Director will have primary responsibilities to develop, implement and evaluate all marketing policies in order to: (1) expand IRIS’ base of university members (member development), and (2) manage ongoing relationships with existing members (member support) in collaboration with the Executive Director and a team of administrative and technical staff. Responsible for activities such as market research, advertising and promotion, and new product development to achieve these goals.
A secondary portion of this work will emphasize contributions to management of relationships with other IRIS stakeholders including Federal, State, corporate, and Non-Profit partners.
Operational responsibility for all aspects of INK and IRIS programs . Day-to-day responsibility for the management of IRIS staff and operations including personnel management, responsibility for space and space usage, relevant regulatory compliance, budget impact, controlling costs, development and maintenance of administrative processes, and input of general technical and data development aspects of IRIS.
Staff Supervision. The Managing Director will, through direct reports, have administrative managerial oversight of all IRIS staff members, as well as functional oversight of an administrative team of six FTE staff. This includes interviewing, selecting, and training employees; recommending their rate of pay and hours of work, planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling complaints and grievances, and disciplining them when necessary.
Program Planning and Strategy . Works with IRIS Executive Director and IRIS leadership to make informed strategic decisions about the organization.
Required Qualifications*
– Master’s Degree or equivalent in any relevant field of study included but not limited to social science, data or information science, higher education, physical, natural, or life science, organizational development, business administration, and relevant professional school degrees.
– Seven or more years of progressively responsible managerial roles in university, non-profit, or similar public or private sector research and member organizations.
– Experience with functional supervision of three or more full time permanent staff.
– Demonstrated experience with successful design, implementation and/or management of member or customer development and support initiatives in public or private sector settings.
– Documented success in managing and supporting fast paced, collaborative technical and interdisciplinary teams.
– Experience with all aspects of HR, staff professional development, evaluation, hiring, and oversight.
– Background in customer service, marketing or sales.
– Skilled problem solver.
– Excellent communication skills, and aptitude for fostering positive relationships, and a commitment to sustaining and supporting a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
Desired Qualifications*
– Experience with successful collaboration in interdisciplinary research or technical environments.
– Experience/contacts in the world of higher education, research and/or advocacy.
– Familiarity with project and customer management tools such as Monday.com, Salesforce or similar.
– Experience with higher education administration, research and/or advocacy.
– Experience with Human Subjects Protections/IRB research protocols.
– Experience with privacy protected and restricted data environments and related legal arrangements.
Work Locations
This position will be on-site at the University of Michigan offices in Ann Arbor, with flexible and/or remote opportunities made available within our overall Center policies.
