Position Summary:

The UC Irvine Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for supporting the IT needs of faculty, students, and staff. Our mission is to provide information technology leadership, services, and innovative solutions to promote the research, education, and community service goals of the University. The OIT Information Security Division is responsible for information security policy interpretation, standards, guidance, reviews, communication, and coordination, as well as providing central security services including security of network and identity infrastructure and leading campus security incident response.

We are looking for a network security engineer with experience in Cisco and Palo Alto firewall and VPN Technology. Under the general supervision of the Assistant CISO, IT Security Operations & Engineering, the IT Security Engineer applies skills as a seasoned, experienced IT security professional with a full understanding of industry best practices, governmental regulations and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of complex IT security issues.

$81,900.00 – $150,500.00 (Annual Salary)

Required:

Three (3) to five (5) years with BA/BS OR one (1) to three (3) years with MA/MS or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Basic skill at reading and interpreting security logs. Ability to follow department processes and procedures. Interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Experience using IT security systems and tools. Knowledge of data encryption techniques. Experience analyzing logs for security breaches. Knowledge of other areas of IT, department processes and procedures. Demonstrated skills applying security controls to computer software and hardware. Experience in incident response and digital forensics including data collection, examination, and analysis. Demonstrated skill at administering complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks. Knowledge of computer hardware, software and network security issues and approaches. Demonstrated experience selecting and applying appropriate data encryption technologies. Working knowledge of enterprise next-generation Firewall, Intrusion Detection and Prevention, VPN technologies, and ability to administer the full lifecycle of the devices. Experience with both Cisco and Palo Alto products. Proven skills managing TCP/IP-based networking, network segmentation best practices, and using common network troubleshooting tools and techniques. Critical Security Controls (“SANS Top 18”) and NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to rapidly learn and apply new highly technical skills. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills; consistent history of building strong relationships with technical and non-technical consumers of IT services provided. Must have great customer support skills.

Special Conditions Required:

Must pass a background check. Must be able to work outside of normal business hours, and occasionally on weekends.
