The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic self-starter with strong IT and database skills to be an IT Support & Database Specialist II in its Information Technology Services Division (ITS).
The ITS Division coordinates IT and communication services for all divisions of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and reports to the Deputy Director of Administration and Development. This Division is organized into three major units: Operations; Infrastructure/ Applications/Active Directory; Telecommunications/Network/Security; and Administration. ITS headquarters is located within the Park Police Headquarters in Hyattsville.
Examples of Important Duties
- Supports the maintenance, backup, and customer interactions related to all department databases.
- Ensures licensing for all databases is compliant, appropriate, and consistently evaluated. Routinely monitors, reporting, and recommending action on database life cycle and updating. Conducts database upgrades and creates migration/retirement plans for new or legacy databases.
- Supports integrating and translating data to reporting systems for department usage. (ex. Data Warehousing, Middleware).
- Develops and documents process related to IT tasks regularly performed.
- Effectively manage unit projects and ensure timely completion of goals and objectives through time management principles.
- Collaborates with user staff, vendors, user representatives and user management in accomplishment of goals and objectives.
- Consults with Division Chief, immediate Supervisor, and others as appropriate, of work program, progress, and problems.
This position involves substantial database-related duties. Applicants should have strong computer skills in and a thorough understanding of (1) microcomputers, local area/wide network servers, routers, network communications hardware, and computer network hardware and microcomputer peripheral equipment; (2) diagnosing and correcting hardware and software problems; (3) Microsoft Office Suite, databases, electronic project management tools, and, in addition, Apple products and equipment.
Applicants should also have the ability to plan, coordinate and evaluate the work of key subordinates; direct and coordinate operations of the technology support unit; train others in the use of computers including hardware and software; analyze and resolve user problems; communicate clearly and effectively (orally and in writing); and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and vendors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in computer science, Information Management Systems, or any related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in information technology support functions.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together when total five (5) years.
- Depending upon area of assignment, a valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum/typical qualifications, the preferred qualifications are an associate degree in a computer science, information management systems or related field, or a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or related field; or MCP, CCNA, or other related certification and one year of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Eligibility
You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.
Retirement Programs
