Department Summary

The University of Oregon’s art museum, The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA), opened its doors to the public in 1933. Designed by Ellis F. Lawrence, UO Dean of Architecture & Allied Arts at the time, the museum was built to house the Murray Warner Collection of Oriental Art-more than 3,700 works of art given to the University of Oregon by Gertrude Bass Warner. After a major renovation and expansion, the museum reopened in 2005 at 70,000 square feet, twice the original size. Over 20,000 square feet are dedicated to museum exhibitions and related programs serving the academic university and community at large.

The only academic art museum in Oregon accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) features engaging exhibitions, significant collections of historic and contemporary art, and exciting educational programs that support the university’s academic mission and the diverse interests of its off-campus communities. The collection consists of 17,000+ works of art across all media with extensive holdings in Asian art (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), Pacific Northwest art, Russian icons, European and American modern and contemporary art, and growing strength in Latin American art. Special exhibitions galleries display works from the collection and works on loan, representing many cultures of the world, past and present. The JSMA continues a long tradition of bridging international cultures and offers a welcoming destination for discovery and education centered on artistic expression that deepens the appreciation and understanding of the human condition.
Position Summary

As the Events and Building Services Assistant, you will support three essential areas of museum operations: Events, Facilities Maintenance, and Security. The purpose of this flexible position is to support facilities and event production and to augment gaps in security staff coverage, primarily during heavy visitation hours and after-hours events. You will perform set up and take down tasks for rental events and productions including room arrangements, lighting effects, and required technology, building access for catering based on security protocol, and event clean up. You will be responsible for providing outstanding customer service to all museum guests and have the opportunity to work alongside and guide JSMA student employees.

In this role, you will also provide facilities maintenance support by performing routine semi-skilled building and outside courtyard maintenance and will be back up for custodial duties. Additionally, you will provide security support when needed for large events or gaps in coverage. This includes monitoring the CCTV and critical alarm system, gallery patrol or filling a fixed post, communicating with security officers and gallery monitors on crowd control and imminent concerns, and assisting museum staff and guests as needed. As the only nationally accredited art museum in Oregon, the facility and event functions of JSMA are of utmost importance to provide exceptional member and visitor experiences. In this role, you can truly impact the success of museum events and the experience of each guest.

The Building Services Assistant reports directly to the JSMA Event Production Coordinator and assists the Museum Facilities and Security Administrator as business needs arise. Work schedule may vary depending on scheduled events and may include nights and weekends.
