The Position
The Kitchen Assistant helps with the Senior Nutrition Program at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center. Duties include: driving a city vehicle to pick up meals from the catering service, heating/prepping food for service, cleaning dishes, and working cooperatively with volunteers to serve lunch to the seniors. This position works Monday through Friday, 9:00am-1:00pm but may be modified to meet the needs of the center.

This is a part-time/temporary/reserve non-benefited position. Incumbents work less than 999 hours a year.

Essential Duties of the Recreation Assistant:(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary)

  • Driving City vehicle in support of nutrition program
  • Using standard and commercial kitchen equipment
  • Assist with Nutrition program activities and events for senior citizens
  • Prepare, maintain, and clean up facilities and equipment for activities or services
  • Issue, collect, and organize equipment and supplies for activities and services
  • Perform a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of nutrition programs including data entry and maintaining supply inventory
  • Maintain records, forms, and documentation on assigned activities or services
  • Direct the use and care of assigned facilities and equipment
  • Enforce established rules, policies, and procedures at City’s Community and Senior Center
  • Provides general assistance to the public

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of: customer service principles; food handling; objectives of recreational activities; instructional techniques; basic mathematical and reading concepts; record keeping; computer programs related to area of assignment; English language, grammar, and punctuation; and laws and regulations in driving a vehicle. The ideal candidate will have skills in: providing customer service; using computers and related software applications; performing routine mathematical calculations; reading; record keeping; performing multiple tasks simultaneously; driving a vehicle; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work.

Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties.

Licensing Requirements:

  • Some positions may require a CPR, AED or Food Handler’s Certification (training available)
  • A valid California Driver’s License.
  • If under 16 years of age applicants must provide a work permit or be currently enrolled in high school.
