IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department , University Environmental Health and Safety , and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Job Summary
- Assesses laboratory research and protocols in order to provide or negotiate solutions to deficiencies and violations encountered during inventories, inspections or equipment evaluations.
- Serves as the lab safety representative and liaison for assigned locations and regional campus(es) during inventories, inspections and evaluations including responsibility for all reports and follow ups.
- Conducts laboratory equipment evaluations for fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewashes and enters data into EHS database.
- Responds to customer service requests and conduct necessary research to answer inquiries.
- Organizes record keeping including database entry, preparing reports, and spreadsheets for inspections, inventories , and equipment evaluations.
- Ensures compliance with state, federal, and local laws as well as university policy.
- Provides assistance with classroom Laboratory Safety Training and preparation of materials.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, applied health, or a related field)
Preferred
- Master’s degree
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years in environmental safety, laboratory work, or research experience in one of the physical or life sciences, health and safety, or environmental science
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Preferred
- Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
