Job Summary:
This is a temporary 18-month position with the potential to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on funding. The Large Animal Veterinarian is a full-time, non-tenure track position reporting to the Chief Campus Veterinarian.
Responsibilities include providing veterinary care and clinical oversight to large animal research
species (e.g. cattle, horses, sheep) in both biomedical and farm settings; serving on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; assisting faculty and research staff with development of animal models and animal use protocol applications; assisting in the training programs for investigators, research staff, animal care staff, and other veterinarians; assisting units in maintaining AAALAC accreditation; supplying research and animal care staff technical guidance in the care and use of large animals in research; providing surgical and postoperative care to large research animals. Primary duties are caring for animals in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences program.
Responsibilities: Provides professional veterinary care to animals in research colonies, designs and implements programs, and provides expert guidance to research staff and animal care/use committees to support the wellbeing of research animals. Trains research staff on animal care principals, and may instruct or lecture students to promote safe and effective animal care principals.
- 10% Designs and implements animal care programs of preventive medicine for designated individual animals and colonies
- 40% Conducts physical exams, diagnoses medical conditions, treats injuries and diseases, and provides surgical and post-operative care for animals in various environments
- 10% Documents medical procedures and activity, disseminates information, and makes medical recommendations based on results
- 10% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders and leadership regarding research protocols
- 20% Assists in the development and review of protocols, operating policies and procedures, and grant applications as needed
- 10% Develops and facilitates trainings, educational courses, and affiliated materials to staff and students on animal care methodologies and processes

Qualifications:
Formal training and/or experience working with agricultural animals (cattle, horses, sheep) in a research setting is preferred. The desirable candidate will have experience with the operations and health management of large animal facilities. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $120,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:
Successful applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without need of employer sponsorship, on or before the effective date of appointment. The incumbent must be able to comply with entry requirements for specialized animal facilities including, but not limited to health screening, periodic tuberculosis testing, vaccinations, and have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) (e.g. mask, respirator, etc.) as required by SOPs or policies.
